Car won't stop drinking coolant resulting in overheating!

  1eight2
Any idea what could cause this. Over heated on the m1 and when I checked coolant bottle it was nearly empty. Filled up and it was fine for the rest of the journey. Just driving home this evening and it's doing the same!

Any help appreciated!

Does the car missfire when you first start it? Is there a mayo like substance in the oil? If either of these head gasket.

Or does the filler cap leak? If the system isnt sealed I have been told that the car will over heat and the water will boil out of the filler cap.

have never seen a 172 have head gasket failure unless it's been a full melt down. they just dont do it.

Most like suspects are
-Radiator
-Stat housing
-Water pump

I am a bit of a noob sorry. Just putting in my previous (other make) experiences to rule out different things

I'm taking it to a garage for inspection tomorrow. Would I be safe topping the coolant up with water and anti freeze as a temp fix?

Problem was the radiator.

Been quoted £230 to supply and fit and top up coolent levels etc.

Would this be an accurate cost or would it be better to buy one off ebay and get a mate to fit it?

Sounds ok to me actually. Would rather see around the £250 mark though

Rad is what...£120 max to a trader, coolant and probs and hour or 2 labour

easy enough to do yourself.. can buy a rad for £60 online (can't remember the site)

I managed to change the Rad on mine without much hassle (I'm not the best when it comes to fixing things) took roughly 2 and a half hours start to finish..

EDIT: Seems they have gone up in price as I can't find them for the same price as the one I bought

I'll supply and fit a non-genuine radiator and do the coolant for £180 if you're close to Nottingham.

Thats a decent price! mine was £80 something from Euro car parts, was abit of a bugger to fit due to the brackets being different.

everything was a straight fit, apart from the little nut things had to be donted from the old rad :)

been fitted for a year now without fault
