Cat D info - help plz!!!

  172 Cup
orite guys, just wondered what peoples opinions are on buying cat D cars? i dont really know much about them, so any help of info would be appreciated.

looking to get a 172 or 172cup in the next couple of weeks, and seen quite afew cat D's for sale and they seem really tempting, especially that they would save me a £1000 or 2.

Has ne one currently got or ever bought one? i know it obviously decreases the value when u come to sell but i plan on keeping it for a good few years anyway. Any opinions or info would help me out loads thnx.

Some CAT D cars are better than the equivalent non CAT D cars of the same year. They have had fresh panels, fresh paint and had a DVLA inspection ( very thorough ) to check to see if there road worthy and been repaired correctly. I know several painters / body specialists that buy CAT D's to repair and they do a fantastic job on them.

This seat is my mates and has had a proffesional 170bhp Re-map done. Its a CAT C and its immaculate - £2500 under list price

cheers for the help so far, depending on how much a get for my car i mite be able to afford a normal one, just cat C n D's luk very tempting. as tomhunt85 said getting it checked over by the AA or a mechanic would be a must. if everything seems ok then i think it should be fine. keep posting neways

cat d not a problem in my opinion (the only reason they go to cat d is that the insurance company didnt want to pay for the repair.

cat d can be put back on the road without having a vosa inspection.

cat c i'd be very carefull with although before the car is allowed back on the road it has to have a vosa inspection on it (this only checks the safety of the car and isn't an indication to the quality of the work.

It will be worth just as little as you paid for it so thats a pointless comment really.

If the seller can prove its been repaired by a reputable bodyshop, using origional parts to a high standard then they are definately worth looking at. My mate bought a cooper s that was accident repaired saved him about 3.5K and it was a minter only had 16,000 on the clock not one of his mates could tell where it was originally damaged. Worth the look IMO mate

Just be careful of any cheap patterned part replacements they rust like hell in no time - original parts only.

End of the day there is no harm in looking, just use your commern sense about it really. As long as its cheap enough your not going to loose alot selling it for alittle less in the future and as long as its been repaired by a decent bodyshop as said above by Goders and Matt Black then your laughing.

its not pointless. yes it will be worth as little as you paid for it but like i said youll find it v v v hard to sell. the buyer market is very small. just dont be tight and buy a proper job. its only a cheap car to begin with so your probably only savin a coulple of grand. is that really worth it for a car thats been f**ked and screwed back together.

A couple of grand to some people will mean alot though, the difference between having one or not. We dont all have giving parents or want to get massive loans etc

End of the day if you have the money get the proper deal dont go with a cat-d just to save 2k, if you havnt got that option then just pick wisely.

most cat d's are pretty light damage to be fare, cat c's depending on the age can be pretty much nothing as well. Just use your common sense or take someone who knows a good deal about bodywork/mechanics and request pics before damage. As for the VOSA inspections on cat c's its known as a VIC check which is Vehicle identity check, all they check is all the vins match up and its not a ringer, they don't inspect the quality of the repair in any way, shape or form. It requires a fresh MOT before the VIC check is carried out.

That's right, there is no vosa check on the quality of the work, just on it's identification.

Just get it inspected by AA/RAC and you shouldn't have a problem. At least you know it's been repaired unlike with a non-cat car which could have been damaged and repaired without the insurance co's knowing.

Re-sale value will reflect what you pay for it so that's not an issue.

I think good cat d/c cars are a bargain but you just have to be a bit more careful.

Good luck with it

Cat D cars that have had an inspection?!

  Mondeo ST220
as said just get an AA/RAC inspection or take someone with sufficient knowledge and you could have a bargain on your hands, CAT D cars are mostly heavily reduced and i know some are as good as new

That is a shocking advert for that ibiza!

Where does he say it's cat c? and what is v-car?

Sorry If I've missed something but it would help if people used some punctuation when writing adverts

Category A: SCRAP
Where a vehicle has been destroyed by fire or so badly damaged, destroyed or deformed that it has no commercial salvageable parts, or the vehicle has been involved in a flood over seat level. The vehicle must be decontaminated and then the bodyshell crushed. These vehicles will not appear in any of our auctions.

Category B: BREAKER
Where a vehicle has sustained serious damage, is beyond economical repair and cannot be safely repaired. The vehicle should not be repaired but sold for parts only to authorised breakers / dismantlers. These vehicles can be purchased by authorised breakers / dismantlers at any of our Breaker auctions.

Category C: REPAIRER
A vehicle where the repairs are assessed by the inspecting engineer as, exceeding the pre-accident market value. These vehicles are repairable and can be purchased at any of our Salvage auctions.

Category D: REPAIRER
Where the cost of repairs do not exceed the value of the vehicle but either the insurer or the insured does not want to repair the vehicle. These vehicles are repairable and can be purchased at any of our Salvage auctions.

STOLEN RECOVERED: MINIMAL DAMAGE
Where the insurer has settled the claim with the policyholder and then the stolen vehicle is found and the vehicle has no damage or very little damage in respect of the value of the vehicle. These vehicles can be purchased at any of our Stolen Recovered auctions.

CAT D'S are very good buys and you save a good 1-2k on cars under 10k and you can save even more if you spend over 10k

you can resale them quite well

just make sure its been repaired to a good standard.

half the people in this thread saying cat d's are bodge jobs and no good are talking absolute nonsense.

cat d's are panel damage, lock damage, when cars have had paint stripper tipped all over it.

how the f**k is that a bodge job if its had a bare metal respray?

living in cuckoo land if you think that.

  clio 172, renault 5
not a prob, go for it. my mate gets cat c's or d's all the time. most cat d's get written off for fook all

Too true, m8.

They are the bargain of the century tbh.

And as some may suggest "id rather have a car thats not been smashed" how the hell do you know YOUR car hasnt been damaged in the past?

Because the hpi says so? b****cks!

Your car could have been damaged and repaired by the insurance previous to when you purchased it and you would never know from a hpi check.

What i will say is if anyone did choose to buy a cat c or d car is to buy it direct from the auction houses THEN fix rather than buy it repaired.

That way you know the repair (you have done or paid for yourself) is safe and that no corners have been cut.

Or if you are going to buy a previously damaged car ask for pictures of the condition before and during the repair.

I cant stand all the crap talked about cat c or d recorded cars (especially on cliosport) by people who dont have clue about them.

You are obviously inexperienced in motor trade terms, thats ok you weren't to know - When using the term "V" car it means that this car has been wrote off and then repaired at some stage of its life. The registration is clearly visible so you can get a bodycheck done on the net to find out which category it is without even contacting the seller.

Its peoples ignorance and inexperience ( not refering to anyone on here ) that give them the mentality that if a car is a cat C or a cat D its been chopped in half and rewelded using stolen car parts. Two of my relatives drive cat D's and they are in far better condition mechanically and bodywise than an equivalent aged vehicle thats never had fresh panels or paint

^^yes I am but so are most other car buyers.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the car, just a crap advert

  MERCEDES CLS AMG
Its like a french version of the highway code - it makes perfect sense to people that speak the lingo.....because you dont understand it, it doesnt mean its crap my son

OK, I'll put it this way. It's a good advert if you only want to sell it to someone in the trade. Why not just say it's cat c, which most people understand.

I wasn't just talking about the v-car bit anyway, more the use of caps and incoherent english.

I think you would struggle on any warranty claims and you may struggle to get it insured aswell. And loan companies specifically for cars wont lend on them either. No warranty problems if its a 172 cup as its out of 3 years. Get a full 12 month MOT with it and if it flys through then its a good indication theres no problems safety wise. Just use yours and a mates eyes for the rest.

  www.renparts.co.uk
unless its a pants repair warranty is no problem. End of the day the dealer is there to make money, they get payed for warranty work..... its not like RUK for example are gonna hpi the car faulty parts came off.. oh and insurance is no problem you just give them the reg as normal etc.

  172 Credit crunch edition
I Bought my 172 cup before christmas (cat D) paid a ggod price for it took it to my local renault they said it had been repaired well and they will honor the remaining warrenty took it to them for a mot and it flew through they only thing they picked on was the rear pads need replacing ( that was put on the advisory note) so yeah id go for it
