Cat removal, should I?

I've got a feeling that my catalytic converter is a little bunged up from a sump overfill by my Renault dealer (difficult to prove so I'm not pursuing it) and I'm thinking of removing the cat (no legal requirement over here) and having a straight through pipe fitted. Has anyone done this? Will it be overly noisy? Will it help performance?

The car is a 2001 172.

if you dont need one, then i wouldnt even contemplate not having one. it'll make it a bit louder, but it really depends on the rest of the system as to how loud it is. it does tend to change the sound of the exhaust imo for the better
