Car  Black 197
slight rattle from the CAT, The salesman said its prob just carbon deposits as the car had been sitting around for a couple of months so i left it as that, Well i've had the car for just over a week covering about 400 miles and the noise is still there...

The only way i can describe the noise is it sounds like a crackling sound i.e when i accelerate it sounds as if stones or something similar is bouncing around in the cat.... Should this clear or anyone know what it could be ? Im thinking the cat has degraded and is breaking up hense the strange crackling noise, Should this be a warranty fix on a year old car on 10,400 miles ??

Thanks

Are you sure it's the cat? The description you've given could describe the noise of the engine detonating?

When my cat went it rattled it's ass off but only at a certain rpm (+/- 4000 iirc).

CAT's tend to produce a bit of water from the exhaust fumes and it might just rotten a bit when it was left standing for a while.

If it's your cat making the noise get it replaced under warenty. (you just got it a week ago right?)

if it sounds like stones bouncing around inside then your cat's gone, happened to my wife's old car and she needed a new cat

It can imagine it can still pass mot with some rattling loose parts in it.
Just get it replaced under warenty.
If the dealer doesn't cooperate just write a small leter to Renault UK about inferieur materials and your a bit disapointed about the service from the dealer. Should make things work. :)

Anyway lets hear what they say first

Ok just an update, I spoke with my local dealer from who i purchased the car from and they have booked it in next Friday for the CAT to be checked, They said if its degrading or defective they will replace under warranty no questions so some good news i suppose, The noise from the CAT has got progressively worse so im certain its fubared so will just have to wait till next week to see what they find

My 182 rattled, I thought it was the exhaust. It turned out to be the fuel rail guard at the front of the engine had come loose (the block of aliminium some 182 owners have polished up), somehow it managed to shear the two bolts securing it in place.
Don't know if 197's have a similar setup.....
