Chances of putting supercharged type-r engine in clio



Hi all, Ive been thinking do you think it would be possible to put a supercharged civic typr-r engine in a mk3 clio. The same engine as the Aero Atom (i think)??

I thought if that could be pulled off then it would make the clio incredibly fast.

Any thoughts??

anything can be done, just depends how much £££ you have

you won't have much change from £10K i would imagine

firstly why would you want to, secondly why not just keep it in a civic thirdly why oh why would you choose the ugliest shape clio to put it in!!

Matt Black has proved the best thing for power is stick in a VW block.

In fact, just buy his clio for 5k and it's all done for you.

The Honda K20a + SC conversion for the Elise/Exige is between £13-£15k dep on where you go.... The engine just slots in too without too much work.

So your looking above that cost.

My mistake i thought it was 197 shape being mk 4, in all honesty just get a type r superchrged, my friend is getting his done and apparently they live with evo's...

bb turbo conversion?

I can vouch for them, s**t hot and around 5k thats probly what you would pay for it to be supercharged and the turbos alot more fun!

the guy i'm getting my supercharger conversion done on my k20A2 said it'll take an fq360 or more to beat you. thats in a ctr. in a clio it would be rapid. jackson racing supercharger fully fitted will cost about 3 grand plus a bit more for tuning. plus you'll need a hondata ecu (500+) plus a good manifold (450+) and induction kit (200+) and then a good few hours rolling road tuning (depends?) the arial atom conversion is different.

have a look at cpl racing. there an arial atom on there with a turbo conversion making 450 odd bhp and it only weighs 480kg. i'd say that'd be quite fast
 
OZZIE, My dad used to have a honda accord sport, with a 1.8 vtec.
Their fantastic in every way possible.

Reliability cant be beaten by any other engine out there, i saw on top gear 2 years ago jezza said honda had produced 15 million vtec systems and hadn't had a single failiure on any of them. My dads never had a single problem either.

Also their high revving, so if you wanted to red line it a lot then the engine will be able to cope with that no problem. They also sound fantastic.

That doesn't mean engines haven't failed, just means the V-TEC system hasn't failed on an engine.

But failures are very very rare, and usually happen because of driver error.

Lustyclio oh right. i full agree with ya mate. the reason i asked is coz i thought you might have meant you like the sudden boost of power you get on the cam changeover and i was going to say with a supercharger you don't really feel this.

with a blower, the power is more linear and just keeps increasing smoothly. you do hear the change in engine note but don't really feel it as much. the main advantage of supercharging these engines though is the torque. a std engine has a peaky torque curve and only produces max torque for a very short amout of time. with a s/c the torque is more flat and sustained so you can really feel the difference in pull. the jackson racing superchrager produces max boost at 2000rpm all the way up to 8800. that makes for a very quick hot hatch indeed

thats a MK2, MK3 is the newest shape one (197 shape)

it can be done with enough money but not really worth it, better selling the clio, buying a civic/integra then supercharging it, even at that its still going to cost a fukin bomb and thats BEFORE insurance!

Torque is improved with a Jackson Racing Supercharger but it's still very, very low due to the nature of the engine.

I've seen 350bhp supercharged CTRs with barely over 200lb/ft of torque.

Reliable though and it's a very nice looking conversion....looks almost factory fitted.
 
Whats the diiference between and supercharger and turbo charger??

Also why do you get turbo lag but never hear about supercharger lag??

turbochargers run off the exhaust so you get lag waiting on the turbo spooling up but a supercharger runs off the engine via a belt so theres no lag waiting on it spinning up

The CLio engine fine with high RPM though. There been failures before but its the way Honda describe Vtec failure's which means that can claim that. Still it is a superb system.

Superchrager works at all rpm making boost foot down it always thee.

Both turbo and superchrage have advantages and disadvantages personnally a turbo is better suited to most people even the Mini and Merc are/have gone to turbos instead of superchargers.

As mentioned previously Guy Chamberlain at CPL Racing is the man to talk to for Honda conversions. His type-R turbo is currently at 11.1secs 1/4 mile but will be quicker still next season. He also built the fastest supercharged type-R.

Thats down to the charger gearing.

The RPM band is so wide that you cant have the charger at a high enough rpm at low engine rpm to make decent torque, whilst not having the charger overspeed at high rpm.

If you only wanted to rev to 6000rpm then you could gear it differently.

I don't really get the Rotrex supercharger.

I suppose you can use a gearbox on it to give more boost at low rpm, but you are just adding more parts to go wrong.

How much "traction oil" do they use?

I cant let my car go no matter how much i want to. I makes me feel too good when i drive it, so if i got a faster car, like a type r then it would be great but wouldn't have such staggaring looks, which to me is just as important as performance, hence why im thinking about the engine conversion. Im just getting ideas together about possibilities for her, whilst i let my wallet recover.

I was stuck up a type Rs arse last sunday night, (metorphorically speaking that is)
I was very impressed with my little clio and am sure that if they'd have been a spare lane i'd have had him up to the ton. Anyway the rev limiter put an end to my fun at what i presume was about 138 although the pointer was saying about 150 ! So he got away from me, just. Im sure his extra cog and higher RL helped as well as his exra 25-30 bhp !
I origanally wanted a civic till i drove one, wicked car but only if you keep it in the top 2.5k not very good for NORMAL driving, no torque. That's what i love about the 172 a good balance between torque and power.
If you must have a blower (SC) there's a big hole down there waiting to be filled where the girls keep there aircon compressor,and a nice wide belt to drive it.

Whoever does the rotrex supercharger conversions for the CTR also claims they do it for the 172, although i've never seen one.

a friend of mine gwynny had a 172 cup and raced one of the other lads in a ctr both std and the 172 beat him ctr's are quick but clio is quicker imo

put a 172 or 182 lump in m8 and look into charging that

Dont care what people say and how good its meant to be - the CTR engine is a load of crap imo. Ive wiped out many on the strip including supercharged ones - a guy i know has a 350bhp CTR and hes lucky if he gets a 13.0 dead
 
The TypeR engine is superb........please dont compare it to the 20v vag unit.

However, EP3 and EG chassis arent crap for 1/4 miling, even with alot of power they go nowhere. Not to mention none of the engine builders for them in the UK are any good ;)
 
And not understood by the clockwork generation ;).

Its all about the chassis.......in the states they are running 11 secs on NA engines........UK are just road cars which utterly suck for 1/4 miling.

The cars might suck, but the engines are possibly the best production 4 pots around.
