Changing the Aux belt - do the cambelt as well?

This isn't actually for me, this is to prove someone else on here wrong ;) LoL

Anyway, said (tight ;)) person has had his 182 Aux belt done at the 36k service and I told him to get the cambelt done at the same time as you might as well if you're going to all that effort - will save £££ in labour compared to doing it separately at the 5 year mark, and also reduce the risk of a ££££ early failure.

Is my thinking right and his wrong?

(please say yes :clown: lol)

Not 100% on the aux belt procedure with the 172 but if its anything like my old 1.6 (very similar design) then theres plenty more effort to be made to change the cambelt as well.

You need to remove/refit the aux idler and tensioner, lock the cams correctly, replace the cam core plugs once you've finished, and some other stuff I imagine.

Also you end up having the drivers side headlight out for the cambelt, whether you have to do it for the aux belt as well I don't know.

The 36k aux belt charge is a lot less than a cambelt so I guessing its far easier (talking renault stealers prices here but all reletive).

Sorry  (I could be very wrong though!)

No, the aux belt and tensioner doesn't take much effort when compared to the cam/timing belt.

IF the cambelt was to be done, then you might as well replace the aux belt (and tensioner if needed) as the aux belt needs to come off anyway, but IF you are only doing the aux belt in the first place, well, the cambelt requires much more time and effort. So I wouldn't bother, especially if its only on 36k (unless its coming up to being 5 years old.) Or unless you wanted TOTAL peace of mind lol.

Cambelt should be done every 5 years or 72k, aux belt (+ tensioner) is 36k.

I've got the same dilemma: car is 4yrs, 2mths old and has done 35k so is due an auxiliary belt change now - for what, about £250 at a specialist?

BUT, 9 months later in Sept next year it will be 5 years old and therefore due a cambelt change too, even though the mileage will only be around 40k. This will be more like another £400.
Or, I could combine the two soon for less than £500 for peace of mind, spending an extra £250 now but saving £150 in the long run.....

Think this is what i'll do - just a pain in the cash flow at this time of year!

Get them both done now 4 years 60k is what I'd get them done at.

Yeah, just seen your other post on that. I guess between 4-5yrs is entering into the dodgy phase for these..... I'd hope that with only 35k on the clock, mine is likely to be ok but you never know how previous owners have driven it.

Looks like RS Tuning will be getting a call soon......

Agreed, get them both done now and you will have nothing to worry about for the next 4 years.

when he gets the cambelt done he'll need to get the auxbelt replaced again anyway

2hour job for the aux
5hour job for the cambelt

offically total time on a 182 is 7hours

But doesn't the aux belt just need doing again when the cambelt is done....? Sure I've seen that somewhere here.

But yeah, it's a crap time of year to have to be contemplating that sort of outlay - it'll just have to go on the credit card... :dapprove:

Yep aux belt comes off to do the cambelt so chnaging its no effort and should be done regardless when its untensioned as it has to be to get the cambelt off.

Mine was 35k and 4 years 2 months in the summer, so due the aux belt and service, had the cambelt done same time for peace of mind, and saving some cash as I will keep it for a bit, (unless an Elise comes up!), but either way a new buyer will "discuss" it on purchase....
