Claybars

I am looking at claying my car next time I come to detail it.

I have been looking at a few so would like some advice on what you are using or what you recommend. I have a red astra with soft paint.

so far:-
Zaino Z18 Claybar
The I4detailing lime bar
Wolf Chemicals fine grade bar

Also help with a lube would be good, currently looking at Valet Pro citrus bling as it can do many other things aswell.

I had a play with the zaino one but I prefer bilt hamber's clay over any. Very cheap and it's more a natural unlike the cheap poly stuff out there.

Also you don't need a clay lube mate. Light shampoo/water mix or demon shine 50/50 with water.

2 for £5 in asda still mate. Can be used as a drying aid aswell.

is the much difference in the various grades of clay?

I'm currently using a poly clay from CYC and don't really like it much, feels very plasticy

I always thought there was different grades for different paint types, soft, hard etc.

Maybe you have a hard clay? i heard the I4D uber lime bar is good on clio's.

I am sure Gally will correct me.

Elite car care. Shinerama do it. They also have a massive massive stock of bits. For the same cash there is no better.

If it's easier just get the zaino mate. I have sites I like to order from. Also ebay will do bilt clay cheap plus small delivery. Oh it's the soft clay.

Do you have a tar remover? I always use the tar remover twice before claying then I wash again quickly. Less chance of marring the paint with the clay. :)

Of course i have tardis ;)

i have Menz203s to follow it up afterwards then followed by my BF GEP, AFPP then my new Vics which will go in with this order.

it's supposed to be a fine / soft clay AFAIK. I know the different grades of softness.

I personally prefer the feel of the megs clay an will prob go back to it next time.

Poly clay is very cheap synthetic guys. Jd will tell you the same. It's very poor. Also more possibility of marring the paint.

If you ever get a feel of bilt hamber stuff you'll see what I mean. It's quite a pure natural clay.

Oh and the different grades aren't for paint they are more for how bad your paint it. If you have mega tree sap/fallout. Or overspray you would use a heavier grade.

Bh's soft clay is one i'd use on any paint. I'll get a full pot of Zaino to try at some point as I highly rate their products. Plus discount from i4! :)

Can ply it very easily. Love BH, cheap and soft.

Sonus green was good but the new grey stuff just seems different, its a bit tough and plasticy now.

Personal favorite for heavy contamanation before machine polishing is Megs Red agressive. But at £30 a block it aint cheap and its a bit overkill.

Also G1 is great. Pig to prep, make sure you polish with glass polish first, clay and then wipe down multiple times with IPA. Its wiper proof.

I use G1 on my front and rears, and use rain racer on the sides.

Sorry G1.

Was just reading about it on CYC, say G1 is the one for the car. 30,000miles protection

So they say, heard very good reviews about it, but also others have difficulty with application causing poor performance. I do a bit of town driving for work and G3 works well at 30mph, and just as well as any other when at 60 / 70mph. bit of a PITA when washing though as it sheets very well, but the glass doesn't get as dirty as it normally would.

Yeah I used a finger mitt mate but I imagine a foam app would be a little quicker. :)

Try for 2 layers if you can.

Good choice dude i'll pick some up soon and get a decent feel for it. :)

I made two baskets one on shinearama other on cyc.

Then had a look round the other sites see if any of them could offer them all on one P&P. Then thought forget it give the Z-18 try.

It will be ym first time claying so i won't have anything to compare it to so it will be amazing to me. 2 bars aswell cant go wrong. :)

£10 if you want the other bar ;)

Edit: any codes for cyc :)

'cliosport' seems to work again on CYC, get 5 - 7.5% off I think.

Can't see how to reuse my points on there though as you can either use a discount code or points, and my login always automatically adds the discount code.

I clayed my car for the first time not so long back and used BH soft clay. There didn't seem to be much muck on the clay bar after claying compared to photos of other peoples clay after they had done their cars. But as soon as you felt the paint, it felt like glass!

I did find it a bit hard and had 2 pieces on the go with one kept in hot water whilst using the other.

Hot water is key! Oh and the fact you didn't see anything is a good thing!

It should not look like this...

You're doing something very wrong if it does! I'd hate to see what that paintwork looked like.

What technique would use Gally?

I no about rubbing the clay getting it warm and soft first, then rub it in back and forth motions with little pressure. Rubbing the clay into itself between strokes.

If you drop it don't use it. Anything else to add?

Gally, thought I'd see more contamination as my car had never been clayed, well, not to my knowledge anyway. Seemed to do the trick though, couldn't believe how smooth the paintwork was afterwards. Even my parents were impressed

Hi guys. I was actually going do do a little guide at some point but i'll pop in some tips here.

Leeds, the soft clay is one of the best you can buy. The reason for this is if you claying ou want things to be absorbed into the clay rather than sit on the surface. Then refold obviously. This is the main reason that I always do 2 hits of Tardis on the car then a new step of ironx/deironizer you don't have to do this step but the tardis is a must.

Claying started out as a contaminant/fallout remover for sap ect.. so really it should only be used to remove miniscule particles of tar that maybe tardis hasn't picked up. Of course this isn't a problem if you're going to spend 3 days correcting your car but if you're not then you're essentially making the car worse by dragging tar particles accross the paint causing marring.

Even Polished Bliss when they use a more aggressive clay for some overspray or serious fallout, will show picture of how the clay has inflicted marring but they know they are able to deal with this.

Aggressive clay should only really be used in extreme cases and 1 a year. Soft clay like BH's is usually used every 6 months I would say although I try to do it once a year if I can.

I always wash the car, tardis/wipedown, 2nd hit with tardis/wipedown, rinse with the PW, ironx/deironizer, then give it a quick 2bm wash or a quick snowfoam to remove the residue from tardis/ironx.

This is important as those will ruin your claybar quickly if left on the surface.

After washing/rinsing just leave the water on the surface and then do a panel at a time claying and constantly spraying lube using light passes with the clay. Just never ever use pressure even if you see a piece of tar. Just go over it lightly, refold and go over again. Wash and dry before polishing and as you know the paintwork will feel like glass!

I know it might be time consuming but when giving advice I can only give it in a best practice way without cutting corners. It's also quicker in the long run as you'll be spending less time polishing!

Jay you don't fancy sending me a spare Zaino bar to try? Need it by Sunday though! ;)

Also worth noting to split the panel into smaller areas in your head, maybe 2ft by 2ft and work on these one at a time instead of a full panel.

Once you start claying, you'll soon start to feel and hear the contaminents being picked up. Once the claybar starts to move with no resistance what so ever, you can move onto the next section. Its quite hard to explain but pretty self explanatory when you get doing it.

Took me fooking hours to do my Clio the first time, definitely worth it though!

What you got in part exchange Gally ;)

I haven't even received it yet though. Next day delivery is expensive ;)
