Cleaning Cup wheels...

...Ive never had multispoke alloys before, just 5 spokes which were dead easy to clean because you can get in, around and behind the spokes really easy. Cleaned my new Cup for the first time yesterday and had bad problems getting the wheels as spangly as I usually would like!

Any tips?!?!?

Paper kitchen towell - do them twice a week.. DRY!

Takes about 2mins per wheel.

Youll find that dirt and soil (if you do country roads) strangely build up between the spokes on the rear wheels. CLeaning more frequently means it just takes a few mins to clean.

No i mean paper kitchen towel, like polly-roll stuff your parents have in the kicthen.

Wont doing it dry scratch the wheels?

Think Id rather stick with Jay Cloth and washing up liquid as it works as well as wonder wheels but is not as corrosive.

washing up liquid - ermm ill leave you to it!

As I said Toypop do them regularly and its fine. Also, its only brake dust. Its wipes off like a thin layer of dust on the wheel. No problems at all.

Yeah some people have raised an eyebrow when I say I use washing up liquid but no one has yet explained what harm it might do to the wheels compared to a harsh acid like Wonder Wheels?

I figure if the latter is safe then washing up liquid wont do it any harm. Its designed to make delicate glasses gleam but without making them go hazy like dishwasher tablets do so a tough set of alloys that can handle a wonder wheels acid wash every other week should be fine!

Granted I wouldnt use it on paint because it strips away the oils but that doesnt apply to wheels.

The only possible problem is that it is stripping away the grease on the wheel nut threads and between the wheel and the hub - could find the wheel stuck on when you get a puncture. Wonder wheels would do the same though. No trouble to just remove the wheel and re-grease everything once every few months.

yeah thought you meant kitchen roll, just wouldnt like to think I was doing them dry, would surely scratch? Id have thought so anyway.

On my old Mk 172 the wheels were really spokey on that, and a pain in the ar*e to clean.

I used Autoglym alloy cleaner soak for 30 seconds then carefully jet wash. Avoid your brakes and painwork. Got the grime and dust out of all the nooks and crannies

People might frown at using a jet washer near brakes etc but it was a home one and not particularly powerful. I had no problems anyway.

Got them really clean.

I take my wheels off every 7 or 8 weeks, give them a massive coat of polish, so when it comes to washing them, the dirt flees off them!

er its not a good idea to use washing up lioquid, not because of acids etc but because of the salts etc that washing liquid contains, these are stripping your alloys protection of and damaging your paint, of course the choice is yours but its really not a good idea.

i use autoglym wheel cleaner and my finger/or sponge,i then wax with good quality car polish and i dont think mine look bad, .ps there a year old now my wheels

Mint wheels 172cup_nut!

Ive never bothered taking mine off and doing the backs, but having seen those I think I will every month or so. Thought it to be too much effort.

Do you still take them off and scrub them in the cold winter months Nov-Feb?

Ive got this Comma alloy wheel cleaner, they look like new after using it. The spray part of the bottle is bust now so i just paint it on and wash it off. Sponge down and Bobs ya uncle.

hi, i have only taken them off the once, i usually clean them whilst on the car, i have a alloy brush and spray wheel cleaner onto the inside, then i scrub them and they come up like that, you can even use your finger to clean the inside of the spoke, i think they look alot better with the insides done especially on the backs from behind, and the speedline turinis are lacquered on the insides too so they clean up quite well.

right, hold on, just you wait right there you little gay :)... 2 mins per wheel???.. we talking a cup wheel here??.. thats like, 120 seconds!... no way... i am one of the fastest (and bestest) humans around and can only manage about 4 mins per wheel.. I think we need a "wheel race-off" sonny to choose the victor :)
