Climate control dash and time dash die (182)

Right, was having a problem last night need some help asap please.

When I start the car up everything comes on fine ie the climate control dash and the time display dash, but as soon as I twist the stalk to put any lights on both dashes don't display anything, but the climate control is on?!

have you tried the dimmer dial down by your right knee?
