Clio 1.2 16v Sport question...

Hello people. Im currently looking into getting a new car, and my local dealer has offered me a 1.2 16v Sport Clio in Williams Blue with 11,000 miles on a y-plate for £6300.

What Im interested in knowing is the REAL stats for the car, not what it says by the factory, the real 0-60, real top speed and whether or not they are as nice as people make out.

Its got a nice sporty interior, cd player, and all the other toys you would want, but I am changing my current car (corsa 1.0 12v 3cylinder) because it is too slow and want something quicker, which does not require me to change down gear every time i come to a hill or anything that resembles one. lol.

Thanks for any help.

Itll be quicker that the Corsa and a much much nicer car than the Corsa, but it isnt going to set the world on fire in the performance department. If you can afford the insurance, have a look at 1.4 16v Clios as they have about 25bhp more than the 1.2 16v and a fair bit more go.

Rhys

top speed - indicated 127mph (private road officer)

1/4 mile in 18.512 secs

0-60 - somewhere in the region of 10 seconds

overall - quite a good little car, economical and can embarass some bigger engined cars

does suffer on steep inclines, but then again mine only has 79lbs/ft torque, which aint exactly much

anything else????

its a 1.2 at the end of the day and therefore wont be braking any records. A nice looking car but if you want speed youre best off looking at something bigger.

What im more concerned about is top speed and 0-60. I just want something around the 10 second mark, and the 1.2 sport seems to offer all the toys for a good price in a good all round package.

Does a 1.2 REALLY do 127mph?! Im sure it wont. What would it do really, on a normal flat run? Would it be capable of 110mph?!

What you dont know Rhys is that the 1.2 16v MK2s (not sure about MK1s) have valver (same as williams??) front discs!!!!!

because what i dont want to happen is to buy the car and then realise that it isnt actually as quick as i thought it was, and then ill be stumped because ive got a loan out for the next 5 years, so the car will need to last me, and keep my happy as well.

I was told that the corsa would be able to do 100mph, but try as i might, it WONT go over 90! :-( Its been heavily modified, and im going to transfer my ICE install and my 17s (same fitment as renault) over to the clio.

I will be happy with a car capable of 115mph - do they have good top end torque then? Because mine simply dies out over 75mph, its pants!

between 70mph and 100mph (indicated) it pulls pretty well, quicker than quite a few cars that i have driven

Well youre not honestly going to get that Corsa upto a ton with 17s on are you?

Go test drive a 1.2 and put it through its paces, then youll have a better idea if its the car for you.

Does anyone know the torque figure for the 1.2 16v sport?

I know the bhp is 75, but what ft/lb torque does it have?

Also, book states 13 seconds 0-60 - is it actually any quicker?

I am currently trading my 1.2 16v in, The top speed ive had is about 120mph but you will more than likely run out of road before you get to 120mph lol 0 to 60 speed is about 12 to 13 seconds, I think the engine is rated at 75bhp.

Thats all I wanted to know, as the Clio has a nice basis for a modified car, good lines and a choice of mods available, with the added bonus over the corsa of not arriving at a cruise and seeing every other car look the same as yours! :-(

Another question...has anyone had any sort of bhp increase from any mods done to the engine?

I was thinking of getting a powerflow full system and a green air induction kit for it, just wanted to know if they work well, or whether standard set up is better.

well my car when standard was on a rolling road at bb tuning at produced 77.9 bhp (fly) with 79lbs/ft of torque

modifiedit produced 72.2mhp (wheels) with 79lbs/ft torque

i have full k-tec system and s-spec air filter - produced almost 15bhp (very optimistic, but the proof is in the pudding)

my ex used to have a new corsa with the 1 litre 12V 3 cyl engine. It used to go to 110mph quite happily and kicked my mates new punto 1.2 8valves arse. That wont go above 96 mph.

And no the 1.2 clio will not break records liek already stated and it sure as feck will not do a 10 second run to 60 on the flat. And it will not do 127mph on the flat either.

Keep the corsa for a while longer then get a decent sized engined car. Also the clio has horrible seats that take a week to recover from.

chris - that is why i stated INDICATED - i dont believe that the car can get anywhere near that figure

i have done a 10.7 second 0-60 time using AB22 timing gear, and have the timing slip to prove

If a 1.2 can do 127mph then Im selling my Valver!!!

Whats the point in me having a hot hatch when a 1.2 with nearly 100bhp less and a bit more weight can go just as fast!!!!????:D

My car has real trouble getting over 127mph indicated!

My old Mk1 1.2 used to get 115mph indicated, which was just a flaming bag of poo and untruth. My mate would overtake me in his 16v and say his clocks said he was doing 100mph!

indicated speeds are not a million miles out. Maybe 5 - 10mph or so at the top end. Unless you run a ford mk1 fiesta bonus where you can get 80 mph in 1st gear at 4krpm apparently.

Down a large hill the thing may indeed bounce off the limiter in 5th which may be 130 or whatever speed. It will not do that speed on the flat, indicated or not.

I think realistically youll get 105-115mph and maybe a higher indicated speed. Just dont be surprised if you see 120mph on the clock, but still have large articulated vehicles and campervans overtaking you!!

:) lol, thats ok. I just want something that goes over 100mph, dont care if the speedo then reads 120-130 etc, just want it to do me a better service on longer journeys then the 1.0 corsa is doing me, and I wanted something sporty at the same time, as I plan to change it in 5 years for a 172.

The 1.2 Dynamiques are so, so much better than the old Mk1 1.2s were (I used to have one). Back in the day, if you bought a 1.2 you got tinted windows if you were lucky and youd never, ever have mistaken one for a 16v or Williams.

The 1.2 "Sport" would have been one of the later Phase1 Mk2 Clios.

If youve got £6300 to burn, Im sure you could get a newest shape 1.2 Dynamique Phase2 for that money. Theyre about £8-9000 new, so there should be some used ones around the £6k mark?

But isnt the 1.2 16v sport better? Its got the nice sports style seats and alloys fitted to it, the seats are what really make the interior stand out IMO, smart bucket type seats.

they do good deals on new clios too. 0% deposit apr etc free insurance.

I may of been tempted with the 1.4 its got 95bhp i think but test drove a cup and then went an ordered on 3 days later )

I do miss the 19 Energy though, was a top motor *sobs*

Ive driven a few 19 energys before, had one to use for a couple of weeks last year, didnt like it much, but then it was a 1.4e which gave out something like 60bhp...lol And it was 8v, and old. But give it credit, it did its job well.

erm no energy engined 19 gave out 60bhp. The ph1 carbed engines had 80bhp and the later ph2s had 73bhp.

I make do with my 8500+ rpm revving 19 ph1 181 k miles energy quite happily thankyou.

It will beat your 1.2 quite happily and it has seen nearly 7krpm in 5th gear which is very near an actual 140mph.

Those R19s are pants! Especially the 1.4 energy models, the only decent R19 is the 16v model. I dont actually own a 1.2 clio yet, just finding out about them 1st before i decide whether i want 1 or not.

really? Is that right?

A corsas better is it. The 19 is faster than the clio. I have owned a ph1 16V 19, and 3 ph1 energys.

Obviously driving a corsa has numbed your brain so much you dont klnow what a decent car is.

Lol! What about the 19 Cabrio and TD - more top 19s. A 1.4 Energy may not be as fashionable as the Clio, but a hell of a lot better than a wheezy pushrod 1.3 Escort on massively underpowered 1.4 Astra.

the cabs gay and slow! Not my cuppa tea at all.

The TDs ok.

Ph2s are not as good as the ph1s though. They are heavier and use crapper grade metal so they rust a lot easier and quicker than the ph1s.

Anyhoo I shall comfort myself when I rebuild that F7P and woosh by with at least 200bhp under me size 14.
