clio 1.9d

A friend of mine has a 1.9d clio, when the engine is running it sounds like its misfiring and its producing alot of blue smoke.Hes thrown lots of money at it so far and has had it back and forth to his local garage with blocked injectors and so on.Nothing seems to have worked so far, so other than the obvious taking it into a field and shooting it has anyone any idea what could be up with it?.Another garage told him it could be a blocked fuel filter or faulty fuel pump, has anyone any idea what could be causing it?

[h=3]The Answer is in the Smoke[/h]We can generally understand what is wrong with a diesel engine by the colour of smoke emitted from the exhaust. There are three basic colours - black, white and blue.
[h=3]Black Smoke[/h]This is due to a air to fuel ratio imbalance, either the fuel system is delivering too much fuel into the engine or there is not enough clean air (oxygen ) a few things to look for :
  • Faulty injectors (injectors need attention at about 100.000 to 120 000 miles)
  • Faulty injector pump
  • Dirty air cleaner
  • Turbocharger or intercooler faulty
  • Problems within cylinder head, valves clogged up due to faulty EGR (exhaust gas recycling unit)
[h=3]White Smoke[/h]Normally means that the fuel injected into the cylinder is not burning correctly. The smoke will burn your eyes.
  • Engine/pump timing out
  • Fuel starvation to the pump causing the pumps timing not to operate correctly
  • Low engine compression
  • Water/petrol in the fuel
[h=3]Blue Smoke[/h]The engine is burning engine oil
  • Worn cylinders or piston rings
  • Faulty valves or valve stem seals
  • Engine over full with engine oil
  • Faulty injector pump/lift pump allowing engine oil to be mixed with the diesel

  Whichever has fuel
My 1.9d used to play up terribly.

I put 3 bottles of Forte fuel treatment in the fuel tank (not at once obviously) and its run perfectly ever since and that was about a year ago!

We were at work yesterday and it was dying, hes shelled out around £500 for someone to look at the injectors so far.It sounds like a petrol car thats running on 3 cylinders. He bought it with a faulty speedo, the service intervals were showing like 2k between them a year.He thought he had lucked out and bought a grannys car until he realised the mileage wasnt clocking up properly. The car could have serious miles on it TBH but he has a fair amount of money already in the car and needs its fixing.Anyone know a renault specialist around the halifax area??
