clio 172 advise mpg etc

Im looking at getting a 172 mk2 phase 2, the one with the nicer lights! (my opinion only)

What i would like to know is whats the fuel like? i only do shortish journeys to work 4miles at a time! and im looking for 35mpg return.

Im all for laying off the throttle to acheive this but is it possible for normal driving and short journeys?

regards

what sort of milage do you do to and back from work and how heavy on the throttle is that? thats good mpg for this sort of car!

i dont really worry about mpg to be honest. if you costantly trying to keep your mpg high your not going to enjoy driving it!

Around 20 miles, 60-70% motorway. I am not heavy footed but cruise at 60-70 mph (try doing more than that around the Thames Valley in the rush hour!) :)

i would just like a car thats nippy and gives good mpg, ive had 3 cars in 3 years that give 21mpg and its getting a bit old and expensive!

Here's a twist on the same question...

How reliable is the OBC at working out MPG's?

I don't see quite how I'm getting 40-odd MPG' out of a 172, when the company Mundano Diesel is doing high-40's.

I know they're 2 completely different cars, but even Renault say that you shouldn't be getting 40 to the G!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, it just doesn't sound right

Why are you thinking about a 172 if its economy your after?

Surley your better getting a diesel/smaller engined petrol?

Its actually pretty reliable mate beleive it or not.

I went to newcastle from glasgow and back, round trip it was 371 miles which was roughly 42-45mpg. Dont it on a full tank. Could have got more but....

With the odd blast here and there including a tussle with a RR sport upto about 138mph  , did i say Newcastle? I meant Germany

I get around 32mpg, on pretty clear roads going 6 miles to work, thats driving nice and steady cos it isn't warm, I think 35mpg may be a little optimistic.

Drive consitently and anticipate whats ahead and you will easily see above 40mpg in a 172/182 no problem

Easily yes, but not on a short journey where the engine is cold.

I got 50mpg doing a constant 65mph for 100miles solid, but short journeys drink fuel.

+1

Definatley, 3-4 miles isnt good enough to get the car warmed up properly.

Doesnt help the fact there dog-rough from cold as it is :S

I do around 4 miles each way to work and I would say you will normally get around 30-33mpg. I can get 35-37 but really have to think about it.
30-33 is what you should realistically expect imo. But bear in mind my dads 406 hdi returns 32-35 doing a very similar journey so its not bad by any means.

How are you all getting such high readings? My average MPG has crept up over the past couple of weeks from 29.5 to 29.8 MPG... Most I've got is 35 :(

maintainence

reading traffic

light feet

never going remotely quickly

I guess these are all contributory factors?

No Idea mate bought it with them already fitted, would have to drive a standard one to compare the difference, as far as i`m aware dont know of anyone else who has Kent cams fitted to theirs,

I get 31mpg on a mix of 30mph and national speed limit roads to and from work in stop start rush hour traffic. Get 36+ on motorway / a road runs

I run 95 ron too

  Audi quattro, Clio 172
All figures below based on my clio 172 ph1, from August last year to date (13466 miles).

Based on filling the car to the brim each time (39 times):

Worst MPG: 31.8
Best: 42.4
Average: 36.9

Average miles between fill-ups: 344.8
Most miles out of a tank: 395.5
Least miles out of a tank: 286.6

Average price paid for Super: 101.2p
Most paid: 122.9p
Min paid: 87.9p

Total cost: £1670.89

In terms of trip computer mpg vs actual mpg then the computer overestimated by an average of 0.92%. So, in my case it's pretty accurate.

Driving figures above includes all types: motorway, daily b-road blasts, town driving etc. And all run on super unleaded.

In terms of the most amount of litres it's taken to fill up (46.06) then I've had enough juice left in the tank to get me 400 miles out a tank easily.

  172 Cup, AX trackbeast.
I didn't buy my Cup for the economy, but I've been pleasantly surprised by what it does to the gallon. The OBC usually reads somewhere between 31 and 36, although the last time I looked at it, it was reading 41.1. How I managed that after a day thrashing round the EVO Triangle is anybody's guess. The only way to get an accurate reading is to do a brim-to-brim tank test.

I can only surmise that they get good economy because of the low weight and reasonably torquey engine. Mine is better on fuel than the Escort GTi I had beforehand and about on par with an Astra GTE 8v I had about 5 years back. Neither of which were anywhere near as quick as the Cup.
