Clio 172 Cup buying advice

Not 172 Cups but some decent looking examples below. One on eBay looks well cared for, does have a decat though. One on Autotrader seems ok and is in Glasgow. The advert is rubbish though, something to be wary of.

Thanks for the pointers, the second one on Autotrader I've been in touch with, seems very genuine but unfortunately personal circumstances meant the car is no longer for sale. The eBay one does sound well looked after like you say. Will find out more.

I could be tempted to let mine go for the right price.

Well that was quicker than I thought it might be in the end. I've bought one! Collection a little way off as I'm on holiday. Will update with a thread on my new purchase in due course!
Great to hear you've tracked one down, bought a 172 Cup myself last weekend and collecting it on Saturday. I had one new back in 2003, so it will be fun to revisit!

I'm near Glasgow as well, need to have a Cup get together once you get yours
Sounds good to me, I know have some jobs to do on mine once I get it, like sagging headliner so need to source a replacement one of those from somewhere. Looks like a potentially slightly messy job.

Thats going to be a task as most headliners have a hole for the middle rear belt. Might be worthwhile trying to reupholster yours.

Would a replacement headliner fit in the car I wonder?.. I've found a replacement that in theory I could collect enroute. I imagine that would be a awkward fit while maintaining visibility

Enjoyed reading this chat and nice to see that 172 Cups are currently as popular as they should be!

Picked one up myself yesterday and I’m already smitten. Had a corker about ten years ago and never really got over selling it so I’ve taken a punt on a rust free, high mileage car with stacks of history.

Glad that @Cl1oman got the right car in the end. And a Cup and a Trophy look great parked next to each other @photo_ed 😁 (XTC isn’t mine sadly).

Looking forward to getting a few little niggles sorted asap and taking the Cup out for a darn good thrashing very soon!

Interesting how many of us have gone back for seconds (or more). They’re just such good cars.

Absolutely. It has taken me a while to get back into a 172 Cup but I should’ve done it ages ago. For me, a proper Cup car (and the Trophy of course) was RenaultSport at its best. Sod the interior luxuries of the Cup pack cars - it’s all about that raw, undiluted driving experience. Add lightness etc etc … it works.

Wow that’s a mega photo. Car looks great 👍
Cheers! I know what you're saying about the Cup's, they're my pick of the bunch too. I see you have a 200 Cup in AG, I've also got a 200 Cup, in Storm Grey. Just something about the cars is addictive! :) 👍

Yes awesome pic, just talks to you that image, of the roads the little car has just driven and those it's about to devour.
How is it, does it measure up to your expectations and previous experience of driving a Cup?
Cheers! It was an enjoyable re-introduction to a 172 Cup.

It was exactly as I remembered, absolutely sensational! It's been kept beautifully by it's two previous owners, the last one a mechanic for the M-Sport Rally team, it's well sorted and goes very well indeed. Made me grin from ear to ear and also feel slightly terrified with absolutely no electronic safety net on damp, greasy, Lakeland roads! 😁 👍

Brilliant, glad I’m not the only Cup nutter out there! Some folk don’t get it but they are special little cars.
Yes my AG is great, owned it a couple of times now (crisis sale followed by mid life crisis repurchase) and it’s a fantastic car. Though not as rare as a SG Cup, which is a very cool car indeed - all together that’s a mega collection of Clios 👍

Haha great to hear this, I feel exactly the same. Sounds like a well sorted car. Also ditto the slightly scary bit, think mine could do with some new rubber. Roll on the summer ☀️

I bought my Cup for £3200. It has/had the crushed jacking points but no rust. It's needed a lot of work to make it decent and i'm still not there after 2 years, but I do love it. I thought it was really good at first but it had only done 1500 miles in about 10 years, so once I started to daily it everything wrong started to reveal itself.

Ah the joys of older car purchases, can be a bit of lottery I guess. The dilemma of going for lower mile cars versus something that's been used and well maintained.

I had the chance to go for a Cup at around £7k and about 30k less miles but it would still need work. With older cars it's the little things that can really get under your skin, Things such as my coil pack failing without warning, moisture in some electric connections, blocked drain holes, hard to find parts and strange noises (did I post about my clonks??) are all part of owning what was a cheap car which is now over 20 years old. I still have a long list of things to repair and replace until I'm happy with the car and once done i'll be about £8k into the whole lot. And I still need my front bumper colour matching!

Enjoying hearing other folks 172 Cup experiences.

My apologies, another gratuitous snap of my 'new' Cup.

For those interested and don't mind wading through a lengthy ramble, I've started a thread over on the Trophy forum about the Cup, I'll pop the link here:

Cheers guys.. :)

Great post on the Trophy forum, enjoyed reading that. Nice to see another early Cup has survived too (double door locks are kinda rare I think, went to single passenger door lock on the later models). Car looks mint and sounds like it drives like a honey too. Mine is on stilts till I fix a few bits but can’t wait to get it on all four wheels again.

Great cars them. Owner of the Trophy must be a cool guy

Meh I guess so, knows how to build a nice Clio. I waited till he was out at work to sneak in and take the photos - I know he’s mad that the car wasn’t dry in those pics 😂

@photo_ed do you have a recommendation for a garage in Glasgow area that are knowledgeable for belt service?

I'm afraid I'm not sure, my Renaultsports go to Mick Pittman at Diamond Motors near Nottingham for belt services. There's a guy I know with a Trophy near Glasgow, I'll ask him for you.

Ah looks like that's a restricted area, I'll pick up the little Clio soon and get paid up for full access! But thanks there's a few good sounding options there. Cup belt service I gather is a little less expensive?

Become a member, it’s worth its weight in gold 👌

And yeah a cup cambelt service is usually slightly cheaper!
