Clio 172 Engine

Hi

How long should the engine from the Clio 172 generally last, with oil changes done on time...?

Mine has done 74,000 and runs well, albeit use oil @ 1ltr per 1,000 miles.

I guess 150,000 is possible? I am thinking of chipping it (172 to 184 for £250 sounds ok)

Are these engines know to be strong?

Cheers
Rob

Engine should last for ever if looked after, serviced and parts replaced correctly. Our track car has done more miles than your car others on the forum have done alot more.

How ever they dont really use oil so i think yours may have a little problem.

"chipping" it. It wont make 172 as standard, the best way/cheapest way to remap the car is with a RStuner. You wont see a gain of 12BHP with a remap alone. However with the Rstuner map, the idle will improve the 5K kick will be reduced and you will see a small increase in MPG.

There are a few on here which have 120k+ on them, so they can run for a while.

With regards to the chipping, you'll be lucky to see 172bhp after the chipping!

edit: as above post!

Yeah I know I doubt I will see 172bhp as standard, let alone 184 (same goes for every production car!)...I am sort of back tracking, but I dont generally chase figures...on my 205GTI hillclimb car it has an Mi16 engine (160bhp) running carbs - which only made 7 extra BHP!!! not great, but like with most competitors, they dont pay much attention to the BHP a certain rolling road claimed on a certain day....

I had to smile at the Fastcar test on airfilters posted on this forum, which although were useful, were talking about how different filters make +/-0.4 extra bhp etc...chances are they made no difference, and the variance was down to changes in temp/discrepencies etc...

150,000 miles - sounds good then! I dont think there is anything serious with my car, as it is not smoking one bit....probably a leak somewhere...!
