Clio 172 modding help.

  02 Clio RS 172 Sport
Hi guys,

I have a 2002 Clio 2 RS 172. I also have a turbo kit on the way for it and all the parts for a major service 9timing belt, water pump, aux belt, etc)

I need some advice on what to do with the ECU in managing the turbo. Do I get a tool to read the factory ECU and reflash / retune it? or a piggyback ECU of somesort or a complete replacement?

How would I find out exactly what ECU I have to get a tool to read the ECu so that I can take that and the car to a tuner to sort out a nice tune for it.

ANy advice would be greatly appreciated thanks!

Welcome to the club.

It sounds like you're about to take on a big project, without much F4R knowledge/experience behind you?
Before anyone else jumps in and stamps on you, have you got all the correct equipment for doing a cambelt change on one of these cars?

Whereabouts are you based?

You may be better off in the long run taking it to a specialist who can do all the work required.

I have a specialist doing the service and friends with quiet a good engine knowledge for the turbo kit. But a very fair concern. Wouldn't dive in without the correct people to help me.

But yeah just need some help with the ecu hurdle.

I'd have a look into who's local to you that's capable of mapping it up.
Clio Turbo would be my first shout, but I don't know how far they are from you.

So I'm located in Adelaide, South Australia.
But yeah it would make it easier if I knew what I needed for the tuner so it's all good to go on the day. If I can do it on the stock ecu I just need to get the appropriate interface so the tuner can re flash the ecu or I can get an ecu that will work with what I got for the tuner to sort out.

Ahh, that may make a trip to clioturbo a little more difficult! lol

Might be someone on here that has an RS Tuner with a turbo map file, but no idea.

Haha yeah :tongueout:

So your saying that you think the standard ECU will handle it fine?

So long as I can find a turbo map. If I cannot what is my next choice?

I'd buy a standalone ECU and get that fitted and mapped. I have a gen90 in mine which may work well for you in that plugs into the existing ECU connections. You'd need both the ECU and a dongle (software and unlock code on it) to let you map it from K-tec racing. They ship internationally I believe so that solves that problem.

I'm not sure that standard ECU is up to the job, nor is it easy for a mapper to use the standard item for a turbo map.

I have looked at the Gen90 ECU but that is over $2000 AUD to get. That is a lot compared to some other possible solutions. Anyone know of other ECUs that have been used for this purpose. I heard that a new map on the stock ECU + an AEM F/IC does the job. But if someone could confirm what map on the ECU and how well it worked.

I don't know of anyone running a boosted clio on the standard ECU, but I'd be interested to see if it does work with an AEM F/IC piggybacking off it.

Whilst the Gen90 may seem a lot, it is tried and tested and as long as the person mapping it has half a brain it won't result in needing a new engine. Which isn't exactly cheap.....

2000 AUS dollars is about the same as you'd pay here. It also has the advantages of not needing loom modification / splicing.

Other ECU's - Adaptronic, Typhoon, Omex and EC1 have all been used.

Thanks for the Info.

Do you think something like the AEM FIC piggybacks will do on their own with a stock ECU or the AEM FIC + RS Tuner and one of the base flashes that comes with it?

Otherwise maybe I look into the EMS-4?

Doesn't EFi parts map turbo's on the standard ecu (I know he's a bit far from Australia lol) but I'm sure @Chi or @bloke can confirm this although I think it's only low boost setups.

  dan's cast offs.
yup, the mapping is sorted but he's waiting on henk to encrypt the map and then it should be readily available.

Ok cool as I am only interested in a low boost setup. @bloke how could I go about obtaining this map? Possible to buy and get a RS Tuner then flash it on to my ECU? or sort out a way to remotely do it if I was to grab myself a RS Tuner?

Thanks

Would the AEM F/IC piggyback be of any use? I mean does it do enough to manage the turbo with the factory ECU left stock.?

Adaptronic is an Austrailian company so that would be a good place to start as i would imagine its available and well priced as it hasnt left the country! A lot of clio turbo conversions use the ECU. If you talked nicely with Andy @ Clioturbo im sure he would kindly let you know which wires to splice into (its not that many), and might be able to send you a known map to get you up and running.

If i was in your position this is the route i would go down. Im sure there are an abundance of adaptronic mappers over there aswell.

Yep your in oz so lots of choices, motec, autronic, link, haltec, vipec, wolf, microtech. Essentially you need to find a tuner who preferences your desired ecu.
