Hey guys, Im weighing up my options on what car I want! I intend on selling the 106 after the mot etc. I would love another clio, thought of a valver etc but not too sure on them. My max is probably £1800, no more as it is just every day car!

I love the ph1's , but looking around you can get a decent ph2 for just over 2k! All I need to do is convince my other half :( Whats the tax on the 172's?

Im also thinking along the lines of a 106 gti as I do love the looks of them, or a vw lupo? I just want something I enjoy driving, I tend to pick up the vee keys more than I'd like too!

Budget £1800
Needs to be low tax & good mpg!
Needs to be FUN!

Big ask on a low budget?

cheers guys :D

Phase 1 is the way to go, anything before March 2001 will have no tax raise (any 172 before 2001 is £210, anything after is £235 as are all the 172 and 182s afterward)

Ive owned both a GTi/VTS and Phase 1 and i can honestly say the Phase 1 was better than the two (and better on fuel bizarley)

Phase 1's are like anything else, reliable if they have been cherished.

  Corsa Van. Meh.
On that budget I would be looking at a Ph1 172. A Ph2 will more than likely be a dog.

Running costs aren't too bad. I get around 35mpg in mine. Tax I think is £215 for 12 months.

Most 172's at that price (ph1 or ph2) will need regular money spending imo. Suspension components, bearings, etc all crop up. Just put the £1800 towards running the Vee and use that.

ono ;)

Nah seriously they are good cars (gti) worth a go in an unmolested one. I rate it highly!
