Clio 172 Ph1 - Ph2

Hey guys,

Im brand new to the website (so go easy), as it looks like this weekend I will be swapping my 106 GTi for a 172 Cup, links below!
Love my GTi, but im wanting something a bit quicker!

106 GTi link:

Clio 172 link:

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=515479

Hope the deal is good for both of us, as hes looking to downgrade for cheaper insurance etc, and im looking to do the complete opposite!

I really dislike certain aspects of the Ph1, so was wondering how different they really are.

Stuff like the rear bumper ive heard is a straight swap?
So I can have the rear end looking like a Ph2 :).
Front end I love on the Ph1 so thats not a problem.

Dash on a Ph1 is hideous IMO, any chance it would swap for a Ph2? Along with seats as I hate the blueish theme they have going on!

Also, what kind of features does the 172 have? I swear I read somewhere that they have Traction Control?

Anyone have any ideas?

I would love a Ph2 Cup or normal 172, but I cannot find any where someone would PX with a 106 GTi :(.

I would sell mine and just buy a Clio, but I cannot do with the inconvenience of no car :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers,

Nick

Ph1 and Ph2 are largely interchangable, yes.

Interiors is a fair job, but do-able.

There's always people on here asking about 106's, mate, so might be worth putting a thread up for a PX.

Saying that, the Ph1 is the best 1*2 to drive. (I've never driven a Trophy).

LOL. Yep, and sold them on RR for twice the price three months later. ;)

Stump up your £10 for a full club membership if you're serious about getting a 1*2. The guides section is worth it alone. There's pretty much nothing that's not been covered. Plus, for sale sections and local meets. I think there's a fair old turnout at the Gunwharf Quays meet, if you wanted to pop along and have a look round some cars!

Plus, you get a cool little bits for joining. Bottle opener and stuff..

You won't regret it if you buy a decent 172. Especially the Ph1.

Pretty much better in every way that a GTi, but not by much. A tiny bit quicker, but feel so much more solid, and in a way, more grown up.

If you buy a dodgy one, it'll bite you in the arse, mate. So make sure someone goes with you to look at it who knows what they're on about!

Yeah thats what I was hoping, better, but not by much :p.
Insurance is only £150 more expensive on the Clio than the GTi, so not too bothered by that was I pay £20 a week for it :p.

This doesnt look like a dodgey one, any tell tale signs?

I used to have a 106 GTI and was on 106oc.

Had lots of cars inbetween but the 172 reminds me so much of my GTI. I remember playing with a Cup in my GTI which had a few mods and there wasn't much in it.

However, you really do notice the extra 400cc low down. It's better in everyway IMHO. It's a nicer place to be.

The ph1 dash just puts me off tbh. It's meant to be rawer but I wanted more refinement and as you have to look at the dash the whole time you're in it that was a big thing for me!

I'd say get a ph2 as the ph1 probably isn't going to feel that much different to the 106 apart from being quicker.

Nice low mileage GTIs are going for more than like for like 172s at the moment anyway! I'd sell yours and buy a nice ph2. I've been in your shoes before with the same mentality and I've swapped 4 cars now... Only 1 I was happy about after a month was my 106 having swapped my Ibiza cupra for it.

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
I'm gonna get dash top and steering column flocked at some point. Phs2 door pulls, sprayed speaker grills. Some accord type-r recaros or others depending what you like, job done!! Phs2 dash into phs 1 is more work and hassle than it's worth IMO..

  Iceberg 172
Ph2 was the only option for me.

A few mods and you're onto a winner... I love my 172 after owning all sorts!

I'd go for the ph1 personally. Much more special than a ph2 in standard form. They have the oz f1 cup alloys, more aggressive and special front end, have better airbox setup, twin cat which is basically a sports cat and they weigh 75kg's less.

ph1 is a beast. ph2 not much different - nicer rear but ph1 well nicer front. i also found the clunkiness of the ph1 and wire throttle a bit 'rawer', the ph2 was a bit more like a normal clio, apart from the snappy 2.0 obviously! but the ph1 dash is a bit gay, but who gives a frig about the colour of a dashboard apart from a bird in case it clashes with her handbag ;)

Where you from Nick? Maybe have a gander at a meet.

For me, the issue with Cup's is the dreary seats, lack of Xenons and other goodies. I went froma 172 ph2 to a Trophy which is a Cup spec and do miss those items. If you can afford it the best option is a 182 with Cup packs tbh. If not, I'd really consider whether you'll miss the xenons, auto lights, ABS, leather interior, climate, tinted/antidazzle windscreen... I also think the lack of ABS is a big downer.

Its very tempting. I prefer the Turinis tho..

The rear end on the Ph1 is always changeable to the Ph2 if im not mistaken?
New bumper, lights and spoiler?
Also, the dashes are always changeable if I find the Ph1 way to ugly?

From Poole, in Dorset!

Yeah, could always change the seats to half leather with a Cup?
Will the Ph1 im buying come with Xenons as standard?
Or is that more Ph2 spec?
Cant really afford a 182, a 172 is more within my reach at the moment!
Im about to start Uni in Sept, so budget is tight :p.
auto lights, ABS, climate, tinted/antidazzle windscreen, any of that come with the Ph1? :p

You're going to Uni and looking at getting any type of RS? Times must have changed from when I was at Uni.

  Fiesta ST Stage 3
Spot on . O and get one with a cup gear box like my one :rasp:

I have Budgie old one :)

tbh if i were you i'd chuck a grand at your 106, then you'll be competition for a standard 172, having said that you'd clearly need to spend more to get a similar standard of handling.

I was planning to cam, remap etc.
But have just lost the love for it now.
As for the handling they are pretty much on par as it is?
The 106 is fully polybushed, lowered on Koni shocks, apex springs etc lol.
Handles really well.

Plus...... I prefer the look of Clios..

in that case get yourself a Cup or a tidy Ph1 and then you have the change making it your own.

As stated in the first thread I am very interested in a Ph1.
But I hate the dash with a passion!

Which is why I was looking for Cups!

But i could always swap the dashes over!

Arghhh, cant make my mind up what to do :(

  Nimbus 197, Ph1 172
Try and look past the dash, its really not the be all and end all of a car! Its no worse than a 106 dash tbh! I'm certain i've seen paint specially for dashes some where?

  Nothing at the mo :(

dude the 172 your thinking of swapping with is without doubt one of the finest Ph1's ive seen!!!

I was even gonna swap my 182 with him at one point cause i liked it so much!! its no expense spared RS mate. its in top notch working order. i doubt you will find a better 172 out there :D

  PH1 V6
Hey alll.... not trying to spam Nickson's thread but i am the other 50% of this hopeful swap lol.

As stated in my add im looking for a Gti as i need to save money. Hopefully Nickson will join you guys and turn my 172 into a beast :)

Thumbs up for a good deal me thinks!!! :)

Get the Cup. Better looking, better driving. Best colour of any RS. Best wheels. It'll be newer, have less miles most likely. Cambelt change is cheaper should you need to.

No brainer imho.
