Clio 172 problem

KDF

My 172 is going into the garage in a few days but I just thought I would ask all you mechanically minded people what you think the problem is ?

I get a low droning noise when doing 40mph+. At first it was really faint now even my passengers can hear it. It only happens when I turn the steering wheel anywhere to the right, dead straight or left it doesnt do it .. any ideas ?

The drone is consistent with the speed of the car, and I can now feel it through the footwell of the car. If I dip the clutch or take it out of gear the noise still remains

Ah, you sound pretty confident with that diagnosis ;) which side would it be that needed replaced.. the obvious answer would be the right one I know ,

Also, any idea on costs ?

A humming noise tends to be wheel bearings.

Hard to say which side. You could try jacking the car up and holding the wheel at left and right and shaking it. Any slight play can indicate wheel bearing damage. Expect around £70-90 with fitting.

I had loads go on my old RT. Turning the wheel sometimes makes it stop. Certain speeds make it sound more obvious.

Knocking/grinding tend to be more cv joint related. I had the boot split on my vts last week and all the grease was dry. Had been getting a knocking noise for a week. Replaced boot and grease, job done. £35.

I was thinking CV joint aswell. When my CV joint was gone it droned when I came off the gas. It might just need greased up if its that or a brand new one. Im no expert though.

yeah i know cv joints are normally knocking noises, but im just thinking along the basis its when hes steering and/or disengaging the clutch

Last week when I took wheel off to investigate the knocking, I could see grease all round the arch. I could then see the cv boot had split.

Take your wheel off. Have a look at the boot. It could have come off/split and theres your problem.

If it looks fine, then Id be inclined to say wheel bearing.

But like I say, I could spot wheel bearing hum a mile off when I had my old Clio, used to happen so often.

I did a quick visual inspection on the CV boots a couple days back and they didnt look split/no leaking grease etc.

I will go down just now and have a proper look at the CV joints just to make sure. I will give the jacking the car and wiggling the wheel a go too. Will let you know what I find.

Okay, CV boots are deffinatly not split or loose, seems to be a bit of play in the offside wheel (in comparison to the nearside) so it looks like Chris was right, will let ya know if the mechanic agrees with you though ;)

Cheers for your help folks..

LOL, at first I though so cause my passengers said they couldnt hear anything, but now they can deffo hear it, and you can feel alight vibration through the footwell when it does it.

Needless to say I got it booked in when I could start to feel it.

Wheel bearing by the sounds of it.
That would have been my suggestion CV joints tend to make a clicking sound on full lock wheel bearings just hummmmmm I had one done on my golf recently and it cost £49

If its a wheel bearing you might as well get the opposite one done at the same time, it wont last much longer.

Definitely sounds like a wheel bearing. Usually if you steer to the left then the right you should notice the noise slightly louder either way. I had both the front wheel bearings go on my old 306 within a couple of months of getting it.

Almost certainly a wheel bearing from the description given. Ive had half a dozen or so go on my Clios over the years.

So, what was it then? Is it out of the garage?

Yep its back out the garage, was the offside wheel bearing.. took it for a test drive up the motorway, totally gone now.

Not only that but the steering feels a lot tighter and smoother now ! Cost £120 all in as it was a genuine renault part not a cheaper alternative.

Yeah, having bearings fixed makes a nice difference.
