Clio 172- Which is better- phase 1 or phase 2? Discuss...

It isn't as big a deal as people make it out to be. If you read any review on the 172/Cup you'll see there are always positive comments about the sensitve throttle.

And at least you'll never have to change the cable. Which is a common fault on ph1 172's.

Its a fact that the delay is noticeable. its obviously something you get used to, however when i changed to the 182 it took some getting used to the delay.

my cable became corroded on my old car at 60,000 miles and cost £20 for a new one... hardly an issue lol

fair points there.
how long is this delay?

My VTS' throttle response seems pretty decent and instant tbh...

am i gonna be in shock at a second delay on the throttle? lol

the delay is miniscule... its only noticeable if you've changed from a ph1 172 to a ph2.

if you've not owned a ph1 172 you won't notice a delay as there's nothing to compare it to, which is why most people on here wrongly claim the cable throttle delay is a myth.

i used to notice it on my 1.2 having never owned a ph1, all my previous cars were cable.
i just felt more toy like and light, the cable it heavy but you know where you are with it

I've only ever noticed the delay when blipping the throttle whilst in neutral. Once in gear and on the move the throttle response is razor sharp imho.

And no fubar, the cable breaking isn't a big issue..... and neither is the fbw ;)

ive never known one to actually break... they corrode and stick which is when they're replaced.

and your right, FBW is far from an issue... its just not as good as a cable :rasp:

both girly cars at the end of the day... just the Ph1 is less girly... neither compare favorably to a Williams at the end of the day.

Well i've driven a Ph 1 172 Exclusive and i was smitten but then it was my first ever taste of a Clio Sport.
Lots of torque steer on the one i drove but then again i wasn't used to the power having only had a 1.2 up till then!

Also driven a Ph2 172 FF, a 182 FF and a V6 and i rate the 172 FF the lowest of the lot.
Nowhere near as dynamically sharp as the Cup.
So of what i've driven i'd order them : Cup, V6, Ph1, 182, 172 FF.

But then again i am biased.;)

thanks for all the responses.
i'll probably have about £4k to spend at the beginning of the year. looking at what i could get, there's a couple of 2002 phase 2 but alot of 2001 phase 1 models, so i could have my pick of phase 1's for £4k.
although i think i'll be test driving both as i like the look of both models.

what did others test drive before plumping for a clio, assuming < £5k to spend?

where can i find info about dealer servicing costs for both models?

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
if u have a wee more than 4k my 172 ph1 will be for sale early next year, all mods included, low miles.

i looked at 106 gtis, poli gtis, and audi TTs but they were too expensive

I wouldn't bother with Renault for servicing once the car is out of warranty. There are plenty of decent Renault Sport specialists out there (and in here) who have more knowledge and are ultimately cheaper than Renault directly.

Depending on where you are based (and which of the so called experts you believe) the ones to look to are Rentech, Yozzasport, GDI, RS Tuning, Mark Fish.
From personal experience i know Rentech are very good.

  172 cup
PH1 Looks no where near as good as the ph2 imo everytime i see one i feel happy i brought the cup

I hate the rear, the lights, the wheels and the dash etc......

this is my own personal opinion of course and i suggest making your own mind up and going out and testing a few

id test a PH1 172, 172 FF, 172 Cup and see which one you like the best then make your mind up.

I did this and brought the 172 cup and i love it

  Clio II
id go 4 tha phase 1 there well fun to drive and they feel more racey than the phase 2 unless its a cup172 just remember to wear a glove on ur left hand them gear sticks get well cold!
or just buy a 182 trophy!

i wouldnt say too girly... but them i am a girl lol

you see more mid life women driving the ph2 thats a fact

  phase 1 172
like others hav said its all down to opinion!

round my area tho 90% of the phase 2`s r driven by woman and theres only a hand full of phase 2`s

personally i prefer the phase 1 as it looks abit more hardcore abit like wen u compare old golf gti`s to new 1`s

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
the land rover is awesome, V8 just sounds so sexy, slow as hell but it goes up hills and through water and stuff like a trooper
