Clio 172?

  172 FF
Hi all, seriously considering upgrading my mk2 ph1 1.2 16v to a mk2 ph1 172. Was just looking for some advice, things to look out for or just any tips really from all you lucky 172 ph1 owners out there.
As a sidenote wondered if anyone thinks I'd be better doing a 2.0 16v conversion to the 1.2 16v, or is that jus crazy talk? thanks in advance.

first off, can you insure one, in your own name obviously
can you afford to run one? expect to double your fuel bill, and tax etc etc

not bothered bout the fuel costs dont plan to hoore it everywhere jus now and again, and as for tax think its only 200 a year? Whats the service intervals on a 172 is it still 12,000 miles?

Insurance fronting is a no no.
I ve always been told if you can't afford to do it properly don't do it at all.

ok so how they going to know its mine if on log book in my dads name

i suggest doing a search on fronting there are many threads about it and the reasons against it.. insurance companys are not stupid and if they can avoid paying out they will....

i can confidently say that pretty much everyone on here is in the opinion that fronting is bad, and if you cannot afford to insure a car propperly you shouldnt have it really

as i said do a post, you may be supprised, not having a go just pointing a few things out

i bought clio with intentions of getting my own insurance!! but when i got a quote the insurance company didnt have my latest claim processed as reason i got clio is about a week before i got it my ctr got smashed up by some t***s!! so they quoted me good then when i bought it and went back to them it was like 4000 so went on my dads next year will be back on my own at the end of the day its covered for me to drive so legal

LOL. Do a search my friend. If you crash the insurance company will doing everything they can to wiggle out, particularly if its a high profile claim. They interview neighbours to see who has been driving it the most they have even been known to put surveillance on the house to see who is using it if the cars still running after the accident.
Plus (for example) a 55yr old man for example with a 182, induction kit, lowered, oh look his 17yr old son is named driver, they are not stupid!

yeh but they got to prove that i was main driver i might use it most for 6 months of year then my dad!! anyway not arguing ive been name driver on 2 cars of which i claimed and no probs but i told you why i am a named driver

mate wtf im insured to drive it LOL so its fine ive had 2 claims and they just say who was driving policyholder or named driver

You will probably get away with it to be honest, its only if its a massive claim that they investigate, and you may still get away with it then.

yeh but mate its still legal to drive as a named driver or they wouldnt do it ive proved the system works and ive said why ive done it this time round!! also im down as main driver anyway so nothing they can do

Apologies, I might of misread this and you weren't particularly clear, if its in your dad's name but you are down as the MAIN Driver, there is nothing wrong with that at all, perfectly legit. I was under the impression you were a secondary 'occassional' user on your dads policy and he was fronting you. That clearly isn't the case apologies. :)

yeh but not only that its quite possible to get away with him fronting tbh it aint recommended but still they dont query it
