Clio 182 Failure again..

  Shhh
Driving home tonight from Sunderland to home (about 210mile) i noticed the clock was a little unusual as it was a little bit dimmer than normal. Suspected it was just the dash dimmer switch being out and upped the brightness. About an hr later i get a ABS, Traction Control, and the Serv light come on just as i was hitting about 5k rpm in 4th gear.. so slowed off it went away.

About 10mins later i get the ABS, Traction Control, Serv lights come on again, tho this time remain on. Im on the inside lane of the A1 going through Elksley 50mph speed camera (inside lane had less traffic). So think its little unusual for it not to go away, i tested the brakes and they worked so suspected it was a latched fault and id clear it by resetting the ignition once i left the camera section. Get out of the 50mph limit, into the 70 with the services about 1 1/2 mile away so an ideal chance to do it then as maccy d;s is there and i could do with a pit stop.

Get about 200yds out the 50mph limit when i notice the STOP and ((!)) light come on whilst im doing 60mph, check the handbrake and the thing is down, the engine is still running as it driving, and i can rev it with the clutch pedal in. 2-3 secs later the airbag light comes on, tho im still driving.

Get about 100yds and i lose all lighting control, the headlamps dim to what looks like i have sidelights on, so put me hazards on, now need to stop but the traffic is speeding up from the 50mph limit. Notice i have no hazards, no dash lights everything is failing with no hard shoulder, manage to kill the stereo, knock the headlamps onto side, and put the left indicator on. With the reduced load i have enough power left to put the indicator on, and get up on the kerb....

Turned the indicator off once i was in the bush / grass verge, and then the car begins to splutter and die whislt in not touching it. About 10secs later the engine dies...

Turned the ignition off and tried to restart and nothing, no starter motor, just a click from the relays. Get the AA card out as this aint usual. Ring them inform them that its dead, and from the symptoms i know its a alternator u/s. Realised the battery had been sustaining me for the past 1hr and a bit since the clock light was dim... id not stopped the car since....

AA approved garage turn up in a Citroen van, im like that thing aint gonna tow that huge thing, he starts the car, nothing appears to be at fault tho after 10secs the light come on again as things start failing. He gets his battery pack out to put it on the car, and it springs back into life. Lights back up to full brightness (i could of told him it was a charging fault). He left his pack connected, zip tied the bonnet down as it wont close to allow me to drive the 1/2 mile to maccy d's. Get there and the recovery truck passes to pick me up. Put me on the truck and get me here.....

Car was in with Renault Boston a few weeks back to have the Alternator replaced as it was making a burning / whinning noise. Not touched the car since then, noticed a few other things under the bonnet that need fixing by them. Wonder how long before they can get me in to have the car fixed.

Renault Boston cant collect the car, they said last time the AA need to tow me there, the AA tonight said they wont tow me there as ive been towed already. Nice to see what happends now, as i cant start the car, nevermind drive it.

Here is the picture of the lights, nice isnt it. Have a video of it happening, tho its not very good...

Another fine product from Renault. Wonder what it is this time, only had an Alternator 400mile ago. They moaned it was £340 from Renault new...

Do i get the record for the most number of lights on in one incident..

Looks like a christmas tree.... ;)

Anyway, saved me some fuel on the truck. Got loads left now. All i need is a fully charged battery, and i can drive it to renault. Or, they could bring me one from another car, and i can drive it back.......but they wont..

It happens every year a round this time. It's renaults way of making your dash look more Christmassy by adding a few pretty lights. lol.

Seems like you got a bit of a friday afternoon car there mate. Unlucky.

Phone a towing company say you're from your local renault garage, and that they need to collect a car from a customer (you).

They collect... and deliver... and at that point, they'll ask your garage to pay for it!!

Either that, or find one of your friends with RAC cover, and lend them your car for the day ;).

  Shhh
I have personal AA cover for the bike, just think i should not have to use my AA credit thingy and lose me on call out annual bonus for something they should do in the first hand. Shall ring the service department tomorrow, tho highly suspect nothing before thursday to be done.

The bike is off the road for the winter, so im stuck...hmm, push bike......nice..

A battery booster-pack isn't a bad idea... Argos do them... possible halfrauds too.

Plug-in overnight... and jump to your hearts content.

This happened to me bud it was a daft thing like an earth wire to the alternator that had snapped or had a bad connection. I was able to bump start mine but it kept cutting out and had no lights etc same as what you're saying. i'll go take a pic and show you the wire i mean

Contacted the garage this morning in work about 9am, was told that they cant recover the veichle as they dont have a recovery truck, i explained that i would drive the car to them if they had a fully charge battery to get me there, but they said they cant provide that either as they cant be sure if thats the fault. Was told nothing they can do for me, except that i ring Renault Assistance again.

Contacted Renault Assistance who said they can help me out as it was on a Sunday when i called the AA out, and because the garage was shut they would be happy to sort me out, and i had to decide what time the car would go. I picked 4-30pm.

I then contacted the garage twice, who both times i got the answer machine (Crystal Renault / Nissan Boston). Once i got the people, they said i can drop it off. AA man took it and i rang them, wont have any free time till wed / thurs this week to look at it, nevermind fix it.

Gotta ring the AA about the free 24hr car loan they have for me. Its a smart car, £50 deposit on the fuel and have to show license... Think ill have some of that to do some shopping for the weekend. I live miles from anywhere..

Think its time to sell the clio....

The alternator also failed on my May 04 clio 182. Had the same burning/whining noise you describe. The stop and battery lights would light up when the car was idling but as soon as the engine was revved the lights would go out. Called the AA guys and they said the regulator on the alternator had gone as the voltage from the alternator was all over the place and was not charging the battery.

As the car was still drivable, as id only had the charging issue at idle, I managed to get the car to my local renault dealer where the alternator was swapped under warranty. By the time I had got the car to renault though the lights were on continually and the alternator was complaining alot!!

I have had no problems since. I think it did this at around 18000-19000 miles. Renault didn't mention anything about this being common, but im sure they wouldn't even if it was. Was sorted without any issues about warrant, just gave renault the AA diagnostic form and they fixed it no questions asked.

Hope you get it sorted.

First thing to go wrong with mine after only 3 months last year, the alternator was over-charging, the lights on mine were pulsing on and off!!! Like a dicso!

They changed the battery as well, cos it had damaged it, as well.

My alternator went tits up earlier this year. Started smoking and all the dash lights where flashing. AA turned up (turns out to be an old mate) disconnected the alternator and I drove it to Renault (Swan Street- Kings Lynn).

a simple alternator swap took them over 10 days!! as they kept sending the wrong one, and it was a bank holiday.

Ah the joys of owning a renualt
