Shhh
Driving home tonight from Sunderland to home (about 210mile) i noticed the clock was a little unusual as it was a little bit dimmer than normal. Suspected it was just the dash dimmer switch being out and upped the brightness. About an hr later i get a ABS, Traction Control, and the Serv light come on just as i was hitting about 5k rpm in 4th gear.. so slowed off it went away.
About 10mins later i get the ABS, Traction Control, Serv lights come on again, tho this time remain on. Im on the inside lane of the A1 going through Elksley 50mph speed camera (inside lane had less traffic). So think its little unusual for it not to go away, i tested the brakes and they worked so suspected it was a latched fault and id clear it by resetting the ignition once i left the camera section. Get out of the 50mph limit, into the 70 with the services about 1 1/2 mile away so an ideal chance to do it then as maccy d;s is there and i could do with a pit stop.
Get about 200yds out the 50mph limit when i notice the STOP and ((!)) light come on whilst im doing 60mph, check the handbrake and the thing is down, the engine is still running as it driving, and i can rev it with the clutch pedal in. 2-3 secs later the airbag light comes on, tho im still driving.
Get about 100yds and i lose all lighting control, the headlamps dim to what looks like i have sidelights on, so put me hazards on, now need to stop but the traffic is speeding up from the 50mph limit. Notice i have no hazards, no dash lights everything is failing with no hard shoulder, manage to kill the stereo, knock the headlamps onto side, and put the left indicator on. With the reduced load i have enough power left to put the indicator on, and get up on the kerb....
Turned the indicator off once i was in the bush / grass verge, and then the car begins to splutter and die whislt in not touching it. About 10secs later the engine dies...
Turned the ignition off and tried to restart and nothing, no starter motor, just a click from the relays. Get the AA card out as this aint usual. Ring them inform them that its dead, and from the symptoms i know its a alternator u/s. Realised the battery had been sustaining me for the past 1hr and a bit since the clock light was dim... id not stopped the car since....
AA approved garage turn up in a Citroen van, im like that thing aint gonna tow that huge thing, he starts the car, nothing appears to be at fault tho after 10secs the light come on again as things start failing. He gets his battery pack out to put it on the car, and it springs back into life. Lights back up to full brightness (i could of told him it was a charging fault). He left his pack connected, zip tied the bonnet down as it wont close to allow me to drive the 1/2 mile to maccy d's. Get there and the recovery truck passes to pick me up. Put me on the truck and get me here.....
Car was in with Renault Boston a few weeks back to have the Alternator replaced as it was making a burning / whinning noise. Not touched the car since then, noticed a few other things under the bonnet that need fixing by them. Wonder how long before they can get me in to have the car fixed.
Renault Boston cant collect the car, they said last time the AA need to tow me there, the AA tonight said they wont tow me there as ive been towed already. Nice to see what happends now, as i cant start the car, nevermind drive it.
Here is the picture of the lights, nice isnt it. Have a video of it happening, tho its not very good...
Another fine product from Renault. Wonder what it is this time, only had an Alternator 400mile ago. They moaned it was £340 from Renault new...
