Nope, its not common... sounds like it could be a couple of things such as a leak in the inlet track and/or a faulty engine sensor such as H02-1 or CTS.
Start with the cheap and easy service items first by looking for a seriously fouled up throttle body as this can give faulty idle conditions especially at cold starts. Buy yourself a tin of "brake cleaner" or "carb cleaner", remove the TB from the car and blast all the thick black gunky crud away, then refit. If it works, great, but if not it might be worth putting it on a diagnostic and having the live data interrogated for spurious looking outputs.
TB cleaning tip: You can advance the butterfly/throttle plate by hand to get in there and clean the pivot points but do it gently and NEVER force it as the plate is motor controlled and you will damage it!
