Clio 182 steering movement

  Renault Clio 1.6
Hi All,

Can anyone confirm whether the steering on their 182 cup drifts slightly on general driving. I'm not talking the wheel alignment style of movement it's more like slight jumps. It feels like I can't just let go of the steering wheel and let it drive forward on its own in fear it might hit a slight bump in the road and alter my course? Is this normal or something to worry about?

Thanks

I'm not sure what it could be but I'm beginning to think it might be tires? But it almost feels like the framework is loose or something it's really strange!

Are you talking about the steering jumping/moving to the side when you hit small bumps in the road? Is your car lowered?
Yeah the steering wheel moves slightly it's a strange feeling not had it before in my other cars and the car is lowered on the standard cup suspension, but I wouldn't have thought that would be the cause?

And danix I'm going to the Renault specialists soon to get my Cambelt done so I'll see what they say if I don't fix it before then!

I was thinking if it was lowered the chances are it was bump steer caused by the steering angles being all wrong. Standard suspension shouldn't have that issue though. I've not driven a 182 with cup suspension though so I don't know what 'normal' is like on them.

I take it you've checked all ball joints, track rod ends, bushes etc for play?

The way I can describe mine is that it feels like a magnet pulling it to the side....
My suspension is pretty much new but I do get this quite a lot.
When people say how theres is great in the twisties I don't trust mine 100%.

Will have to have the ball joints TRE's etc checked more than likely..

I'd put my money on track rod ends, the cars are getting on now so it's something to expect if they haven't been done. However bump steer on the cups is more common as it's less forgiving, explains the Sachs dampers for the Trophy I would guess.

Track rod ends. inner tie rods, steering rack bushes (caused my steering wheel to be a few degrees out, then a bump later it was ok!), worn tyres, broken spring (made a massive different to my cars steering)???

Hi, according to your description, i had the same problem in my standard 182. I got crazy to fix it up and finally it was an easy one: the front lower arm ball joints. My mechanic told me he could even note the wheel movement with his hands, without moving the steering. The joints were pretty worn. I would tell you to start looking at this, as it very cheap, and probably you could notice raising the front of.the car
