Clio 182 - what have I got?

Hi
As a new owner, I not too familiar with this model
Is there an easy way to tell what 'packs' I have fitted e.g. how to tell if it is a 'cup' etc.
It only states on the reg. doc. 'Renaultsport 182'.
thanks.

  Listerine & Poledo
if it's got grey wheels, you MIGHT have the suspension pack (or someone may have just had theirs sprayed)
if it's got a splitter and bigger rear spoiler, it's got the wings pack (or someone's just glued them on)

At least you know for certain it wasn't a 1.2 Shopping to begin with!
Welcome aboard!

Thanks for the quick reply

It has got the 'grey' wheels and look original how else to tell about the suspension pack, not sure about the size of the spoiler, don't know what a 'splitter' is though?
I haven't driven the car as yet!

  Listerine & Poledo
if you've got the wheels there's a good chance that the full Cup Suspension Pack was fitted.

the Splitter is a plastic strip under the front bumper, typically not body-coloured. If you've got that, again, chances are you've got the Cup Spoiler pack.

which would leave you with a 182 FF, which is a good thing

A very good thing, very lucky man!
Also the ride height of a Cup packed 182 is 54mm and Non-Cupped is 60mm, I believe thats right, i'm sure someone will correct me if not!

Do you have any pictures of it?

Hi.

That's the hub spacing. I'm not sure on the height exactly but the cup pack lowers it 3mm.

Thanks Mr Goodj

It has got a black plastic trim affixed to the bottom of the bumper, why would that be fiited with a 'pack', has it some significance?

Just tidies up the front bumper bud. Have you got a picture we can look at and tell you?

Just to add, I measure the height to the front lowest point of the sill and it is 153mm, not sure where ride height should be measured though!?
The car is in original condition as far as I can tell, the previous owner meticulously maintained it, the only thing is, that my son recently added yellow racing strips over, which we may now remove.

Sorry guys no pics yet

It does have Xenon lights and washers, half leather seats and a/c, the above mentioed guide although useful is a little vague on the 182 'packs'

  Listerine & Poledo
yep, sounds like youy've got the "Full Fat" 182.
All the 'luxury' trimmings, but with the looks and ride of the Cup

I guess thats a good thing then, huh?

reg. 2004 but high mileage, still looks pretty good, what about the stripes should I keep em or not? (I'm a mature driver!).

  Listerine & Poledo
well, if you take them off you run the risk of having ex-post-van-style dark stripes where they were.

I'm not exactly a young-un but I've got some dubious stripes on my 172, yes they look a bit chavvy, but who's to say they weren't put there to mask where some chav keyed something into the bonnet? Didn't want to risk it.

you don't need to notify the insurance mate its standard from the factory

Goodj is totally correct, the terms & conditions for Bell (which is the same document for Admiral and Elephant) which a significant amount of this forum uses state that you have to declare mods including factory fitted optional extras.

Depends who you're with and how dubious you are of them. For example, Bell/Admiral/Elephant require you to declare all modifications and factory fitted optional accessories but (here's the odd bit) you seem to be able to opt NOT to insure these optional extras (their policy wording seems to have been written with things like air con and sat nav in mind) However needless to say if you do not insure it they will not replace it and therefore in the event of a crash I guess they'd refuse to replace your grey wheels, shocks and hubs (all whatever else is different on the cup pack).

To annoy the consumer even more even though you pay to insure these mods/options they will ONLY replace with standard.

So I'm paying £90 odd extra because I have cup (any suspension extra/mod immediately classes you as a crash-happy chav thus high risk) suspension but if I crash they will only give me non-cup wheels and non-cup suspension* Infact there's a point, I'm 19, 2 years NCB, great postcode, high excess, low miles yada yada and cup suspension & spoiler pack added £90 to the premium.

*This is all according to their terms & conditions. Maybe in real life they'd opt to buy me cup hubs rather than have to buy standard hubs AND then £££ worth of shock absorbers that actually fit the new hub.

wasn't aware of the above, seems a little silly really as it is still a standard vehicle

I don't think I would be declaring them in your case.

It's one thing if you know but take the OP for example, he wasn't sure and with different wheels on, you're never going to tell without measuring hubs.

I wouldn't be declaring them. Jeremy (from RenaultSport UK) called various insurance companies years ago and said about how the cars are standard from the factory.

Very interesting stuff on the insurance

When I enquired at my insurance brokers - they did ask about the model being a 'Cup' variant but how the hell would I as a new owner know if it wasn't for guys like you?

  Listerine & Poledo
Gee, shucks Obcuz.

As it happens, you DON'T have a cup, per se.

You have a 182..... just hat it happens to have the Cup Packs. A straight Cup has naff seats, manual air con and a dashboard made of old Cabury Roses trays :)

So Mr Goodj, do I understand that a 182 'cup' would be declared as such on the reg. doc? or was there no such thing - only refers to the add-ons?

  Listerine & Poledo
coo, now you're asking.

the cup is a seperate model altogether than the 182, so quite possibly.

a 182 with cup packs would just be a 182 with options ticked, no different from specing sat nav

Thanks for all the input

One more thing you knowledgable guys could advise me of (sorry I have lived a sheltered life)

Oooh - no spare wheel, so what happens when tyre is punctuated?

Tyre weld mate in the boot!

Oh sounds like a full fat which is good!

Why would it have stripes though? That doesn't sound good! Oh and if people knew what engineers really look at on cars they would never declare anything!

The stripes are about three months old, can't say much about this, I agree - they look a bit boy racy, and my racy days are 40yrs behind me
How to remove them without detriments?
But may keep them for sentimental reasons, still undecided....
I understand that they were also an option on the 'blue'

By the way, it's not just you, the clio lineup seems to easily confuse people at first (and it still confuses lots of people a while later...)

Maybe this will further clarify things? This is the sales data for the standard 182. Shows how many colours, shows how many people ticked which options: cup suspension, cup spoiler, sat nav, recaro seats. http://www.renaultsport.co.uk/roadcars/heritage/182/

Compared to the 182 cup http://www.renaultsport.co.uk/roadcars/heritage/182cup/

And thus the 182 trophy http://www.renaultsport.co.uk/roadcars/heritage/182trophy/

Thanks for the links Steven, very interesting info.

I see that the 'Cup' launch date was September 2004, this one predates that by six months, so must clinch that it is not a 'cup' model (when asked by insurers!).
