Clio mk1 phase 2 RT

  Oyster Card
Just got a Clio RT, 1996 model nice and modest 1.4 certainly has the power behind it.

However a couple of things I've noticed, the bite point on the clutch is a lot higher than my old 1.2 RN, However I test drove another RT before getting my current one and that had a high byte too, is this normal?

Also I get a screaching noise from what I've been told by a friend is the fan belt, mainly when I start up, sometimes it will do it if I drop down from high speed into gear three.
Done it at the petty station earlier when I was reversing too, very high pitched squeel.
Anyone know what this is and again if it's serious?

But all in all it's a lovely ride, cost me £700 and the ride is compairable to my Dads £16k Mitshibish what with Power steering etc. and the clutch is so much ligher compaired to my other Clio.

Screehcing sounds like the fan belt needs replacing / tightening. My 1995 Clio RL used to do it. Same thing, did it when it is cold and damp, or if you put the engine under stress (turn on lots of electrics, lights, fan, etc) or sometimes when you change down a gear - just because of the changing load on the engine I guess causing it to slip.

Can't remember if I had it replaced or just tightened now as it was ages ago.

I've got the same problem with the fanbelt at the moment mate, just need to get round to getting it sorted. As Robert said it's only when it's damp.

Have you got any pictures of it?

just tighten it, mine was exactly the same, when i started the car up it screatched and when dropping from 4th to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd aswell, tightening it fixed it. and my clutch bitin point is high too, 1.4 97

Thank god sounds quite simple then, knowing my luck it'd mean the cam belt needs replacing or something like that.

I get a similar sound on my 1.4RT. I basically get a sort of screeching noise at times if I change gear. The nose only last for a split second and goes away as soon as the clutch is fully up. The most common times I hear it is if I am changing down gear from say 4th to 5th or 4th to 3rd, or if I am changing up gears but still reving the engine slightly during the gear change. Does this sound as though it is the fanbelt?

Someone on here suggested the other week that it could be the thrust bearing on the clutch but I don't know which of the two it's most likely to be. I don't hear the noise very often and when it is to be heard it tends to be once the car had warmed up a bit (but this is not always the case).

Do you think it's the fanbelt or the thrust bearing on mine going by my description?

How easy is it to tighten the fanbelt? do you just literally have to turn a nut?

Not meaning to hijack your thread mate but it just seemed like a relevant question to post.

Hi Donsrno if you look back to your old post about it I posted in it about me having the same problem, what you've described does sound like the thrust bearing. tbh. my old clio and my new clio both do it only if i kane it away from the lights tho if I pull away normally it's fine.
If I catch the accelrator and up the revs when changing gears it does it then too.

As I say mine isn't really to be heard pulling away etc and is usually when changing between 3rd, 4th and 5th. I was hoping it might be the fanbelt as it would be an easier fix and a lot cheaper.

I don't really hear it that much TBH and I don't think I've heard it at all in the last two weeks.

Yeah my old one did it in 3rd - 5th too new one doesn't do it yet, but to be honest I've had three mk1 clios all three of them have done it my personal opinion on it would to be leave it be, obviously if it starts to get worse get it looked at but like I said my Clio done it for 2k+ would still be going strong now if I had not of crashed it.

You should be able to tell if it is the fan belt by waiting for a cold damp morning. Start your car up, turn the blower onto full, put the lights on full beam, put the heated rear windscreen on, any other electricals you've got. Maybe rev the engine a bit. This puts a bit load on the alternator and if the fan belt is loose it will cause it belt to slip and scream. If it doesn't then maybe it is the clutch bearing...
