Clio Mk2 phase 1, want it to go faster...

  Clio 1.6 Initiale (w reg)
I have a Mk2 phase 1 clio Initiale 1.6 16v, and I love this car. Thing is, its getting a bit stale. So I've decided to do something about it.

Talked with my mates who are a bit more knowledgable, and they gave me 3 options

1) Nasp, whatever that means. Apparently its cheaper than the other two options, but I wont see as much of an increase in performance

2) Turbo, bit more expensive, but it will give me a massive boost or somthing like that

3) supercharger, apparently it can be done, there is something called a super 1600 which is my engine with a supercharger on it so I'm guessing it can be done.

Someone suggested doing an engine swap, or getting a new car. I could do an engine swap, to a 172 engine or something, but then i'd want to do all this again in about 6 months time, so it would really cost me far too much. And I love my car so much, I aint gonna get another anytime soon.

So, not buying a new car, and preferably not doing an engine swap. What can you suggest.

Engine is a K4M if that helps

Nasp- Normally aspirated(N/A), so no forced induction. speak to Mini-Valver on here he is having quite an extensive build done on his 1.6 16v, he is going for 160bhp.

The super 1600, is N/A.

turbo, again, as you said, possible, very expensive.

Can you get bodies for these engines i remeber seeing something a little while back but that may have just been bespoke work

I know buying a new car would be a) easier and b) less stress but my point is, if i were to buy a 172/182, in about 6 months, i'd want to do exactly the same as what I want to do now. so i'd end up spending double. besides, I've been told if i do it right, i can get it >200 ponies, and thats all I need. I dont need any more than 200, and doing it to my car would be unique and interesting. Thats why I want to do it.

p.s. I've been known for doing silly things in all aspects of my life, just cause I can, so if I can turbo my car, its getting done lol

p.p.s. Someone said that certain Rover turbos might fit my engine. anyone know if this is true?

OK, strike the turbo idea for the moment, lets put it on the back burner.

NASP seems to be the way to go if i want to keep my car. So what do I need to do? someone said cams, throttle bodies and forged pistons, but to me, thats all jibber jabber. So I think whats best to do is I get told what needs done, and I pay someone to do it. Am i headed down the right route?

I've spoken to a couple of companies who produce turbo charger kits for RS Clio's and both told me there would be no plans to create a turbo kit for the 1.2 up to 1.6 clio, mainly I suppose because the most sensible thing to do would be to either drop a 172 engine in or buy a 172. I've only ever seen one non RS MK2 that was turbo'd using the origional engine and that was a foreign one, when someone posted the site up on here.

The pug 106 GTi and Saxo VTR/S 1.6 have a variety of f/i kit options and there is one company who even specialise in rrwd conversions to the saxo and will put a choice of engines in the back.
It seems a shame the smaller engined clios have been overlooked in this way as these days owning a smaller engined fi'd car is probably a fair bit cheaper / desirable, so much infact that even motor manufacturers seem to be catching on to this.

If you do consider nasp tuning be prepared to spend alot (like 5 times the value of your car) to even get anywhere near your ideal figure of 200 bhp and stay reliable and have it done properly by people who know what they are doing.

You can within reason get any engine to fit just decide how simple you want and what you want to achieva dn how much you've to spend.

Talk to GDI/Angelworks/Yozzasport and ask them there views.

Cheers for that Edde. I checked out Angelworks, and it looks like if I want anything done, its gonna cost £3000 for each bit i.e. throttle bodies and cams etc, think I'm gonna leave the big mods till I have a better job.

Its pretty much been decided that Im gonna stick a new exhaust manifold on the engine, get it gas flowed and superchipped. Wont cost more than £1000 (I know some people apparently) and I should be able to squeeze 150-160bhp out that engine (its already at about 125 thanks to my mate G) it will do for now.

But if I still have the car march 09, 182 conversion, and the year after that, turbo that, should be fun lol

Getting that level of power won't happne unless you've a lot of other mods.

Your not making any sense here. You say you'd get a 1*2 then end up doin the same but then say all you want is 200 and you dont need anymore. Well get a 1*2 and your pretty much there? :S You just said you dont need more than 200bhp so clearly you wont 'do exactly the same as what I want to do now' because you need not waste the money.

Stripping is always a good option, you can do it yourself and best of all it's freeeeeeeee!

I know i say that, but if i were to get a 1*2 now, i'd get used to it in about 6 months. i'd be looking for a faster car, or ways to make my car faster. If i gradually build it up to it, and set myself a limit, I dont have to spend either 4 grand finding the car, or 3 grand getting the conversion. I may find after doing my little bits to it, thats is perfectly enough for me (and this is likely, as I only use my car for going A to B, with the odd diversion to C and D), and therefore, save myself 2-3 grand. Plus, it means I can do it bit by bit, I can manage money better, and get gradual increases instead of one big expenditure and having a car I cant handle.

Also, for all those who simply wrote 'Get a 172' if you read the first note i say I AM NOT BUYING A NEW CAR!!!!! I just paid off this one, and I am not going back into debt to pay off another. I can handle money for upgrades, i will not be stuck in a contract for car repayments for a long while yet.
