Sounds like my 106 gti did when a valve went.

I couldn't tell you buddy, just sounds similar to mine did. Its had done 127,000 miles so I sold it to a guy who just wanted the body for a project. It wasn't worth fixing.

I'm sure someone on here will have more info on what it is.
