Clio sport 182 sounds like a diesel(rattles) loud at idle

  Clio 182
Hi, was wondering if anyone can help. I have just brought a Clio 182, and it has a loud rattle at idle, like a diesel! When you put your foot on the accelerator pedal it stops rattling and sounds ok. The oil level is fine and oil and filter just been changed. Thanks for any info or help.

Cheers for the superb prompt reply! What exactly is the dephaser pulley? Sorry to sound stupid. Is it linked to the VVT system and is it usually replaced when doing a cambelt kit change?

took mine for a service yesterday, and had a rattle on idle beforehand, the mechanic said there was a loose jubilee clip on the centre on the exhaust and tightened it and now is fine!! happy days! might not be the same as yours, but seemed to rattle it at the rev range where it idled.

Can you upload a video of the noise?

Mine was much the same, dephaser pulley. Replace and all is well.

It is not usually replaced when doing a cambelt change unless you ask for it.

Whats the service history like? lack of oil changes can cause it to go.

Can't upload a vid of the noise as the car has been handed back to the trader to be repaired hopefully. The history looks ok as regards to servicing. Deffo is not a loose hose clip, internal engine noise towards the left side.

Dephaser is infamous on here.... I think it can only be changed with the belts off so fairly costly job. Have a search on here, there are a couple of vids that may help you identify it but the diesel sound is a telltale sign. Good luck
