clio sport engine tapping/ knocking on tickover

hi all ive recently brought a Clio sport 172 anyway today its started to tap/knock on tick over and when you rev it the tapping knocking gets faster but not as loud does anyone have ant idea what this could be ive read that it could be the dephasor the car has recently had a cambelt and pullys any help would be appriciated

could be the dephazer mine sounded like a diesel on tick over but could be the bottom end dude :\ get it to a good garage!!

thanks for reply mate when the car is revved high you cant really hear it mainly on tick over if it is the dephaser can the car not be used does it need changing asap

its not oil mate its had a oil and filter change yesterday as ive have the rear main oil seal replaced

Ah rite.. Just wondering, old 1.2 mk2 I had used to tick like and old clock when the oil was low..

Wrong oil grade for a start. Should be 5w-40 take it back if it was not noticeable before hand and get the oil changed to the correct grade

Would it make it tap though mate and its going back and getting fresh oil just hope it's no damaged the engine

Also is there a way you can find out if it it defo the dephaser thanks for your replays guys

Right I've been out to the car it dosent tap rattle or knock from cold drive to work by the time I got to work it started anyway it tapps right up to 3,000 revs then can't here it and then it stops tapping for a few seconds then starts tapping again so really don't have a clue what it is its off in garage on Monday for fresh oil and filter using 5w40 fully synthetic oil any ideas would be appriciated

if its the dephaser, then it *should* get really noisy before imploding on itself, so you should be ok. In fact, i'm not sure any of them have done this yet? Obviously the risk is the cam belt slipping/coming off if it does implode.

Ok mate thanks for your reply might just be start of it going il just keep an eye on it

No need to scare the poor chap:( Never heard of any failing other than one that was fitted incorrectly.

Change the oil and filter and see how it goes if its still there get it looked at by a specialist to determine the cause.

Ok mate it's in the garage tamoz thanks for your reply will post when it's been done to see if its cured or not thanks guys

Can you determine exactly where the noise is coming from in the engine bay ?

I had a clicking/tapping noise that I could hear inside the car.

Turned out that it was the carbon cannister.

Get your ear down by the drivers side headlight and see if thats where its coming from.

If so, its the carbon cannister.

Tbh mate I can only really hear it in the car struggle to hear it in engine bay but it gets faster with the revs it's had oil and filter change today so god knows what it is

How could I tell of it was carbon canister is there anyway I can check I've listend in engine bay can't really here it but if I put my ear to drivers head light I can here it

I'm having the same problem with mine, however the dephaser was done beginning of the year. Can the canister just be taken out?

That's what I'm trying to find out or can you unplug it what mine does is when it's warm it's starts ticking when I rev it gets faster then stops then after a few seconds it starts again

Sounds the same as mine I think does it at idle but only after 10-15 seconds. Also don't think it's a plug as you can only really hear it when say in the car.
 
The carbon canister is underneath the drivers side headlight. When it is making the noise get your ear down by the front bumper just in front of the drivers side front wheel. Not in the engine bay.

It can be unplugged. It will flag a fault but won't put the EM light on.

They can be replaced obviously.

All it does is feed fuel vapour from the tank to the engine.
