Thing is, it’s never about a better car being the reason why prices are so high. I would much prefer to own a 205 over a trophy. Because I owned them in the past. I have a massive soft spot for them. Undoubtedly the clio is a better car, faster more refined. But that doesn’t matter. I owned several 205’s back in the day and to me if I could afford to have £25k sat in an old car I would never use then I absolutely would. It’s what the classic Ford market has been about for years. There is nothing enjoyable about a RS turbo in my experience, they were never my thing. But people spend mad money on them.
I think ultimately the clio will get there, just not sure if they are yet. I owned my 205’s in my early 20’s so 20 years ago. They were cheap as chips, throw away at the time. They ranged from 86 to 92 so off the basis they were c15years old at the time, with the market now at its highest level 20’years on. I think the Clio has another 10 years until it reaches its level. Maybe the trophy will hit that point before, I’m not sure. To many they are at the point currently where they are just ‘Old cars’ ina. Couple more years they will likely become ‘Retro cars’
I would love this clio to sell for £23k though. Think it would be great for the owners. Personally I’m just looking forward to getting past the morons on Facebook posting ‘I have £900 what’s out there’. Sooner that happens the better for all of us!
I get that these cars are bought to fill a garage and maybe go to a show or two a year, not to be daily driven. It's the guy on autotrader that thinks his 104000 mile 205 is worth top crypto is whats ridiculous rather than the low mile example! If I could have a mint R5 tucked away I would, but I'd struggle not to drive it 🤦♂️😂. This trophy isn't part of the normal used car market and would probably be better on a more specialist selling platform and as much as we think it's mad money some 40 something who had anew one and has now made a fortune may well snap it up for the nostalgia. If the seller is happy to wait I'm sure it will fetch a good price eventually.

I don’t really think it needs to be advertised on some of these new dangled car auction sites. I’d much prefer to buy one from a specialist dealer. The buyer fees are ridiculous and purchasing through these auctions are frankly ridiculous. Especially when it looks like the vendor is doing the running around.

The worry is that the same will happen to the clio market that happened to cosworths , a few very nice cars sell for high money. Owners see this and try to cash in but in the end lots of cars listed at high prices but very few selling.
I think mk2 clios really have another 10 years before they become a collectable , I would see a Williams as a much more collectable car than a trophy justnow.

Why is it a worry? I can’t see Clio’s ever hiring the dizzy heights of the old Ford Performance market. It’s balmy and is engrained into generations of Ford owners. There just isn’t that kind of following for Renault in the U.K.
There will be a time in the future where Clio 1*2’s are sought after, we are getting there now. But like we have both said, I think it’s a good while off yet… in fact when it arrives will there still be a market for classic hot hatches. They are already taxed heavily, Fuel will be mad money and emissions testing is only going to become harder to overcome!

Its all down to what someones willing to pay. For example, i can’t believe some folk will part with 65k for an Escort. Likewise the guy with the Escort can’t work out why i’ve just spent 6k on a 16 year old Honda.

Exactly the point I was trying to make really. Folk are into some weird perverted s**t. It’s amazing some of the hobbies people have and the reasons for those hobbies. Have it with cycling, I have been a Mountain biker for years. Recently the sport has exploded in popularity, bikes now are mad money. I own a bike that lost price when new was around £8k, I paid nothing like that for it. I want an ebike now, but some of them are like £13k and sold out! Which means people are paying that. I find it balmy, almost pricing me out of the sport. It’s a funny old world.

Not quite as simplistic as that to be fair. I want one because my time is short at present. So in an evening I can get to the forest and do 10 runs in an hour and a half where I’d probably struggle to get 5 in on a manual bike. Just makes better use of the time for me. I was a complete hater at first but see the sense in it nowadays. It also means local areas such as Cranham which are hateful steep runs with god awful pedal ups start becoming broadly enjoyable. Ultimately I would ride more because of it. So whilst usual weekend days out would be less intense doing more is arguably better even if it’s assisted

I can’t get it to CAP… which is worrying! Probably a problem with our system. I am surprised that it books so strong. They will have no sales data for the car that’s for sure! I’m friends with one of the editors next time I chat with him I will ask him where they get the data from for this kind of stuff.
What’s more impressive is that since August it’s gone up from £5k to nearly £19k.
Given that the book has moved 26% (3yr/60k) since May, the only time in its history to grow 5months consecutively that doesn’t look right.
But that doesn’t happen does it…? If you are actually selling a car you won’t sit on it forever if you are not getting a sniff. There will always be chancers, we see them nearly daily now. But by and large there are still nearly 3000 clio 182’s and god knows how many 172’s either taxed or Sorn. So it’s a fools work putting an unobtainable price on a car that won’t sell, if in fact you actually want to sell it.
So there is a few things that have came to light on the trophy forum.
There is 4 prev owners and not one.
The car has rear CUP dampers sprayed grey / silver , it’s not on original 182 Trophy Sachs dampers but has the Twingo R1 60mm Sachs dampers that had been bought from a group buy on the forum.
All be it it does have trophy Speedlines from Renault but they are the second edition wheels with all the casting marks and not the OE factory spec ones.
So for a car with 29k on the clock where is the genuine factory Sachs that start with part number 8200 and not the twingo Sachs that start 77111.
Also why has all 4 wheels been swapped for the later edition alloys from Renault and not the genuine factory ones without the casting ?
Either way it’s a stunning car but for me I don’t think trophy’s are a classic yet.
Give them 10/15 years when people are driving around in electric minis and corsa’s and then see.
Then imo you could class it as one of the last best N/A Hothatches of all time.

The Twingo R1 60mm Sachs are the same and slightly better than the standard 182 Factory Sachs for the fact the twingo Sachs came with scrapper seals.
The dampers will do exactly the same job and the only difference is seal and the part number but the part number is ref to the car model

Car wasn’t worth it when it was 10k, 15k, 18k, let alone anything above 20k.
Rear shocks is a bit of a cheek, no one who’s going to buy and invest will spot the wheels.
Save your cash lads and buy a 172 cup, much better car.

I was very lucky to purchase a Trophy (No63 - 1 owner 83k) earlier on this year before the price went mad - when I bought it in March 21 it had a Cap clean price of £2975 and a below price of £2350. It was also missing it’s Sachs due to the owner not seeing the value in refurbing them due to cost and probably condition for the last time. A Trophy owner came to luck at the car and gave me the advice to leave the car as it was and don’t spend anything on it but I wanted/started to recommission it and keep another Clio on the road rather than cash-in on a quick profit - Also a few people on here used to see it driving around Bradford/Brighouse and comment about it’s not just a little red Clio due to the condition which also gave me the strength to do the work.
Just think if we would have had a scrappage scheme on at the time it could have gone to the Gods.

Id be interested to see what an insurance company says about these prices. If you wrote your car off, is this the amount your Insurer will give you for the car? Im sure when I was insuring my 172 Cup the agreed value was something like £800!
Guys, you’d do best to throw CAP in the bin. It’s fairly useless in the current market anyway. But trophies and other cars of that ilk they don’t have any meaningful data to provide any kind of realistic valuation, so it’s based on algorithm. I’m due a catch up with my mate from CAP over the coming weeks and I will ask him where they are getting the pricing information from, but I wouldn’t be reading too much into it.

Yep your right - I’ll be having a meeting with Darren Martin soon who is head of Cap valuations and I’d be interested in finding out why they are so fascinated in such a low level vehicle ( Won’t tell him which one HaHa )
Well none that I have seen have been sold by any of the main players and that’s where most of his data is from. I’m sure Derren will have an answer….😂
