ok russ for me to drive and enjoy more i need rear wheel drive pure and simple so if you ask me to pick a car as cheap as a williams i cant can i as rear steer costs more now.

so of its generation, sierra cossie, M3 that sort of thing, i would get so much more pleasure from them than i ever would from any fwd let a lone a williams.

this is why i have a v6 no its not the fastest car ever built or the best handling car ever built, but if you put the effort in it is a better drive imho and for 23k brand new what choice was there????

So its not that the Williams is average, just that RWD cars in your opinion offer a better experience to the driver?

  clio v6
no , its the williams is average in the big scheme of the cars avialable, its just that you all seem to be stuck in such a small pool with no vision of what is beyond that.

there are better drives out there, i have an E30 track car and for a trackday i would pick it over a williams every time, it may or may not be as fast i dont care its a much better drive.

i know you guys just cant believe i am being honest and that you cant believe any car could be better than a williams but i disagree, i think as a drive they are bland.

FPMSL, this could easily win worst thread of the year. Fair point the williams isn't the best car of its generation but it certainly isn't average, and in its class is a hell of a good car.

With the argument of how it compares to 1*2s its been done to death, all I would say is that they are very close if both are in good condition and have a decent driver behind the wheel.

but the point of view you seem to be approaching this from then in the grand scheme of things even the E30 M3 is average

Im with you for what you say,but there not a bad drive tbh,in fact for the money now(2nd hand)there a bargain.
If you can find one rust free that is.

Ok bud i can see your a rear drive guy at heart, and i cansee your point about the cos and m3 as they are both amazing cars, the only point i could bring in there to the discussion would be these cars are more what i would call sports cars as apposed to hot hatches, i couldnt really compare these mainly on the basis the cosworth was (iirc) a good £6000 on top of the price of a williams, the m3 even more, both big cars, big power, rwd and put against the clio the comparison gets even further away so yes i agree where your coming from there

But comparing you to me for example iv had experience with rwd but i doubt as much as you, i can even enjoy driving my dads 2002 nissan micra,(off the point there lol) but im as happy with getting the most enjoyment out of a fwd car as i am out of a rwd car, i think as fwd cars go the williams is up there with the best of them just for pure driver involvment, probably like your 205 gave you, though if your heart lye's with rwd then anything other will always seem average to you

It seems to me from reading this thread that you haven't quite grasped what people are trying to discuss about the williams. Everyone else is looking at it how it compares to similar cars i.e. hot hatches old and new, but you keep bringing these RWD cars into the argument that have bugger all to do with it. I'm not going to claim they are not better cars than the williams, but whether they are or not is totally irrelevant in this discussion imo.

yes agreed they are good cheap fun and they are quick a perfect little track car,, but please lets not go overboard it is what it is no more.

for the same money and much cheaper i could and would buy an old E30 325i not for outright pace but because for smiles per miles its more fun.

plus if you want to tune it drop an old e36 m3 evo motor in and its goodnight williams for sure.

Very fair post, and one to tie it up imo or else this will go on for ever. The williams is a great car for what it is and I love Mk1 clios and they will give many newer hot hatches a good run for their money. Personally I would rather a williams over an E30 but that's purely because at the moment I would rather a hot hatch as I think they are much more fun, though that is only my opinion

i think we have finally come to what we all knew anyway, its down to personal preference, some of us wouldnt buy another clio, some wouldnt buy anything else other than one, some of us prefere rwd, some prefere fwd, but what it all boils down to is

my cars better :rasp:

  clio v6
well i have watched V6 owners get pulled to bits on this site for daring to say they like there cars, all those that jumped down their throats were never accused of trolling or being immature.

so just for once a vee owner makes a point of what he honestly thinks of the williams and suddenly its not fair anymore,, typical.

i drove a well tuned valver and imho it was a torque steering mess and not what i call a pleasure to drive,, each to there own i suppose.

Tight corners especially. There is no denying that a williams will carry more speed through the corner. end of

EVO tested the willy and the 172mk2 when it came out

Shockingly the 172 braked quicker, handled better and faster round a track and was quicker to 60 and 100mph.It also pulled more G's through a corner.

When the 172 mk2 came out the williams was at least 8 years old, hardly a fair comaparison.

Im starting to wish there was a 5 post per day limit for discussion aswel.

Someone likes the sound of their own voice far too much.

where did i say that, is this the point were reason goes out of the window and the keyboard warriors shout loudest.

its not about the V6 never was thejesus brought the V6 into the argument trying to be snide as ever.

all i said and you can quote me on this is, the williams is very average and thats my honest opinion.

I think the only person shouting the loudest is you my outspoken narrow minded little friend. You're deluded and arrogant enough to think you have a valid arguement and point, yet fail to see the glaring flaws.

What does winning races have to do with a road car, or should we get a standard road car and put it up against some DTM cars. "Yeah, s**t those Williams mate, got beaten by a exec saloon. What an average car"

It's a 2.0 N/A FWD hatch, on a grander scale it's s**t, but then I suppose so is a Ferrari 355F1. For a FWD production 2.0 it's still one of the best even now, show me these facts you speak of to say otherwise? Saying it's not one races wont cut it either, lets try and stay focused on the premise that we are still talking about a road car that was released in 1993.

Are there better cars? Yeah of course, but there's a fair few out there, but for a hot hatch it's still one of the best even now. Most people will say your a minority in this discussion, any review would also disagree with your weakly presented assessment.

Lets now compare a V6 to cars in it's class, which using your broad spectrum of analysis would be... ooh, anything rear wheel powered. Actually, don't really need to be too analytical here. It's w**k. Fact.

Dear me this thread has gone completely off the point.

There are folk who champion the williams no matter what, there are folk who champion the vee. There are folk who like one or the other, there are some who don't like either.

That's just life.

Can this pile of cack be locked now please ?

well not long eh one post.

not going to bother with discussing your points as you seem far to thick to follow the flow, your just not worth bothering with.

for a car to be called a legend it surely has to achieve something that puts it above ALL of the others, escorts did in there day minis did in there day the williams clio has achieved nothing.

on that basis i say its just an average car, cheap fun and thats it nothing more, and to me the drive is nothing special its bland understeering boredom.

i think eveyone has had there say now, stevee6 you made your point, myself and others have made ours, lets put this thread to bed shall we?

  clio v6
why not indeed fella,, its only going to decend into verbal abuse rather than reasoned conversation if it continues.

it was good while it lasted.LOL

it's okay, the vid was "Cry me a river" ;)

your quite right, you arent my friend, as you've said horrible things that I will undoubtedly lose sleep over ;) In a twist of irony I dont think I've actually insulted you either (have I?), but it's funny to see who's showing their arse and getting all upset and looking for an arguement (back biting I believe someone once called it ;)). How abouts you pull me up on the points I have made instead of trying to distract from them because you dont have anything worthwhile to challenge them with? I've responded to your outspoken verbose ramblings. Seems like a cop out to me.

I wish I was thick to be honest, I'd engage you at your own level then ;)

Nice try though

in what aspect do you mean the williams has achieved nothing bud?

it was a very good rally car,it won its class back when iot was used, very good road car, yes bland, boring on the face of it, but very good to drive, iv never found a williams to understeer, well actually if you drive it like you would drive a rwd car then yeah it will understeer i suppose, but drive it right and its a great lil car . but i do agree there are plenty of rivals out there to match it, not many to beat it though

It does seem as comparasons(sp) are being made to iconic cars that changed driving ideas, ie the mk2 escort blew the competition away, but then if you looked at the competetion then you can see why, same with the mini, but the williams was put up against alot tougher competition than they had, and it took the hot hatch idea and simply improved it, now the game has moved on, and we are looking at faster more powerfull cars, i get to drive alot of fast cars, ie the new golf gti's and R32's but i still enjoyed jumping bk into my mk1 clio at the end of the day- was it a beter car than the golfs? nope not by a long way, the golfs were not far off speed wise, gripped well and were alot more comfortable, but the clio was far more fun and as everyone has stated in the 'thread' the driving experience is what we are all after

On a better note, hello stranger.

stevee6 is clearly complimenting the Williams imo, he's comparing it to cars that are supposedly in a class above, so even if it's not able to compete, mentioning it along side a Cossie means it's in the same class. Stevieboy said so :)

Still, as previously stated, none of this motorsport nonsense has anything to do with anything... as it's a road car. Very weak basis from which to try and cause an arguement, I mean troll... sorry, I mean make a point.

Quick recap, Williams rally car, apparently s**te and stevee6's laguna can beat them round a Tokyo night stage with an epileptic driver.
Rally car may or may not be a legend, the road going varient however is a legend. I think that word itself is causing confusion, hopefully this will clear up what the word "Legend" means Steven.

1. a nonhistorical or unverifiable story handed down by tradition from earlier times and popularly accepted as historical.
2. the body of stories of this kind, esp. as they relate to a particular people, group, or clan: the winning of the West in American legend.
3. an inscription, esp. on a coat of arms, on a monument, under a picture, or the like.
4. a table on a map, chart, or the like, listing and explaining the symbols used. Compare key1 (def. 8).
5. Numismatics. inscription (def. 8).
6. a collection of stories about an admirable person.
7. a person who is the center of such stories: She became a legend in her own lifetime.
8. Archaic. a story of the life of a saint, esp. one stressing the miraculous or unrecorded deeds of the saint.
9. Obsolete. a collection of such stories or stories like them.

... actually just noticed the understeer comment, IN TEARS!

I got a good £100 off my insurance for been a member of CS so worth doing still.

As for this Williams thing, agree to disagree (but remember your on a Clio forum;) ). It wasn't the best car ever and it certainly wasn't the worst car ever.
Some people prefer FWD others RWD and some both. You get s**t and good ones of either.
