Clio16v - Tappet noise

I have just rebuilt my engine (new valves due to timing belt snapping).

Ive replaced all the hydrualic tappets, valves, etc and I still have tappet noise. I havent done any more than 2 miles in the car last night and have not gone over 3500rpm.

Will the noise go after a time/temperature?

Any feedback would be helpful.

Rossa

Prime....?

I put oil around the tappets, CAM etc as I thought for the first few seconds there would be no oil.

So how long or what conditions b4 the noise stops?

WIth it being freezing outside youll need to get the engine fully up to temp for the tappets to prime themselves fully.

Jsut get it fully warm them check again.

Rossa, ive got the same problem, tho i havent rebuilt my head or replaced the followers. Im told the tapping noise could actually be coming from the injectors! The sound is very much like a sticky tappet sound but this may not be the case. (i even replaced my oil with 10-40 GTX which is thicker) tapping is still the same. Using 15-40 before.

Ive just slapped some injection cleaner (mix in with a full tank of fuel) to see if this clears it up. So far no joy :(

te injectors do make a very loud (surprisingly) ticking noise. The tappets make a distinct tap, not a light wooden tick.

The noise is def tappet noise - you can use a screw drive on the rocker clover and hear them.

Im surprised that the injectors would make a loud noise...

Rockport - I thought that the best oil to use was 15-50 fully synthetic. From what I’ve read you shouldnt start playing around with oil viscosities.

So to prime, its sit at 70mph for 20 mins?

15w50 is a ad thick for this weather, but my engines got it in aswell and it is a bit tappy at startup.

just get the engine hot....dont even need the car to move.

yeah my fault - 15-50 fully synthetic is what im using (i think) ill check tonight. Nick Hill used a slightly thiner oil when i had some work done there. Ive since changed the filter and slap in some fully synthetic.

sounds to me that the noise could still be your injectors m8. How do u mean " use a screw drive on the rocker clover and hear them " ?

before you rebuild an engine or while your rebuilding it leave the hydraulic tappets soaking in engine oil.this helps to prevent the rattle when you first start the engine up.tappets will prime themselves as the engine warms up.

i have tappet noise at startup in cold climate, clio williams.

seems though that after a little warm up killing the engine and firing it up again after 20 seconds most of the time clears the noise. maybe some tappet gets stuck with cold oil

i use semisynth 10w60 and im very happy with it.

The noise will slowly disappear after you run it for the first time.

Theyre always noisy after a rebuild....

yeah i remember i was almost in tears when restarting my vlaver after engine out rebuild. you just have to blank the noise from your mind and be patient, noise on my dissappeared slowly but was completly gone after about five ten mins at a fast idle, and have been silent ever since, bar the obligatory couple of mins when cold, grin and bear it

I literally have just finished doing exactly the same thing with my car - new head etc and mine makes exactly the same noise- it does quieten down tho after a while - definately the tappets. Plenty of oil and gettin it nice and warm does the trick - kinda sounded like a bloody diesel when i first started it up (last nite) Got the fright of my life!!!! not to worry tho.

10W-40 is thinner than 15W-40 mate, only when cold though

your tappets are probably leaking a bit overnight and thats why they rattle on every start up.have you tried some oil additive in it? sometimes helps.
