Clio16V-Timing/CAM belt snapped

Dear All,

My timing/CAM belt snapped last night. The engine was at low revs and I dipped the clutch fast. Today I turned the engine over and cant hear any knocks etc. Whats the chance of just fitting a new belt and things being OK? Am I wasting my time or is there a 50-50 chance?

Anyone got away with fitting a new belt and everything being OK?

Thank you for your time in this matter.

chances are its fuked.....! mine went in 2nd and 10mph, and i stopped instantly and ended up with 15 bent valves!

Best way to look at it is its the perfect chance to either get a willy lump fitted, or get urs rebuilt with cams, headwork, etc!

only bad thing is its gonna cost!

What millage where u on? Mine went at about 65k, and 1 week before it was booked for a new belt!

Adam_16V,

Same as that (2nd @ 15mph). Its on 98k and I was going to change the belt in a couple of weeks.

15 Valves? Where did you get the valves and how much were they?

Was there any other damage, piston ok? What would my list of bit be do you think? head gasket, valves, ... Is there anything that normally breaks while trying to do a job like this?

Regards,

If you want to chance it, fit a new cam belt and do a compression test on all the cylinders, that will tell you if anything is fecked without removing the head. You never know, you could get very lucky!.

Most likely that you have bent a few valves and they will need replacing, shouldnt have done any damage to pistons or scored the bore, but removing the head will reveal the extent of the damage.

Valve spring compressor to remove and refit the valves, can get them from Halfords for about £30 or less. Timing is set by looking for the timing marks on the head and engine casing.

Cant remember off the top of my head what type of head bolts they use, thing they use torx head type fitment.?! Is that right, anyone confirm?

98k  ur supposed to change it around 70 fella. Although ill have to admit iv done the same myself!

Not sure how much valves cost as i bought a 2nd hand head instead, and had that worked on! I think they are about £15-£20 each roughly, but not too sure!

Youd be best off replacing rings and bearings as well, as u might have problems 6 months down the line. and if the heads coming off then u will need a new head gasket as well...! k-tec do a nice kevlar one :D

I ended up having the engine completely rebuilt, new everything!

if it shafted the cheapest option would be just to buy a second hand head and get someone to bang it on. they dont seem particularly prone to wear anyway. I wouldn;t pay more then £150 for the head (dont pay extra for a "low mileage" one from a scrapper - they are ALL low mileage if you see what i mean) then pay someone £150 to slot it on. + £100 for parts and fluids

This should see you back on the road with new belts and full service for <£500

Paul Mitchell / Infini Car could proably provide you with parts and fitting for a bit extra then the above price but with it would come peace of mind

Adam, the belt was changed at 60 odd k. When you say rings, do myou mean piston rings?

16v - 2.0, who is Paul Mitchell / Infini Car? Do they have a web site etc?

Where is the best place to buy valves? BB performance dont have any on their website!

Thanks for all the replies.

All and more information welcome.

All,

I have seen cam timing discs for vernier pulleys, will I need one if i am putting in new valves or CAM? ie Does the pulley have to be at a perticular rotational position with respect to the CAM. If so what angle?

I have seen adjustable vernier pulleys - do they advance or r****d valve opening times?

time up the engine and fit a new belt.see if it starts but i bet its bent the valves.use a gen belt because they have timing marks on them so you can double check youve got it right.the last cams i bought come with the timing disc.you need the vernier pulleys so that you can get the cam timing spot on when fitting performance cams.

if ur wanting cams and verniers speak to Bondy from here, he will do u a good deal!

you may as well go for the verniers, then you have the ability to adjust em if needed!

might have to think about getting mine changed now. mine was changed at 62k and im just comin up for 95k  what mileage would u avs for the 2nd belt change.? also is it easy to check the belt myself??

rossa where you based? you only need verniers if you got non standard cams. also i checked and i,ve a full set of valves. kept them when i went big. adam-16v who,s bondy how much for verniers.

All,

Ive been looking at valves. Is there any mileage in buying and using genuine Renault valves?

Also, does anyone have any hydraulic tappets that they wish to sell?
