Bear in mind I charge £675 for cambelt, dephaser, aux kit, oil, filter, water pump and coolant, and all of that would be genuine parts. Your getting charged far too much IMO.

Ask to see the cam locking tools if you want to let them do it. If they are silver (probably laser) they will not be able to do the job correctly .

Ahhh - but he gets a 'winter check' thrown in.. Don't forget :p

I am a bit concerned that they are 'throwing in coolant' as if it's a perk. It's a requirement as you kinda don't have any left...

I had one in with tippex all over it today. Bolts cross threaded, over tightened, missing. Was a nightmare!

  A special one.
Look lads, your saying Kwik fit are going to do a s**t job, not the techie in the garage. Do anyone of you know this lad? Do anyone of you know the experience he's got? I belive in giving people a chance and until they f**k up i'm not going to **** them off. It's their job to do the job properly, if the job does not get done properly however I will come down on the like a ton of s**t! They sound like good people and are doing their upmost best to help me out, so why not give them a chance. You all may have your cars sent to a specialist and then get anal when no one follows the crowd, but at the end of the day my car was sat at the side of road spewing its s**t and I need my car fixed ASAP I don't care who does it as long as they do it right!! They said they can do it I will hold them to that and I didn't have time at the time to get someone to tow, load it to a specialist. I'll also say that if this guy does do a good job on my car I'll be back on this forum and telling you all you're wrong! If however my motor does churn it's ass I will say you're all right I should of told them no and put it on a 1st class flight to the nearest specialist. I'll hear back from them soon and hopefully ill be back behind the wheel tomorrow. Right now a bottle of cider will be nice.

No i dont follow the crowd, i do everything myself. But if i was not able then yes it would go to a specialist who has the correct locking tools and knows what they are doing.

Do KF own the correct locking tools? Have you asked this question?

I think you should.

he charges only £25 more yet he uses genuine parts which KwikFit will not and he knows exactly what he is doing, which KwikFit will not.

I also forgot about the dephaser which is over £100 alone.

So you've been there and done it. I haven't and until I see a s**t piece of work I'm willing to give people a try! The reason I didn't turn my nose up a kwikfit is becuase I know nothing about them whether they're good or bad, but what a DO know is that they were willing to help. If the guy in the garage does do a good job I will recommend people to go see billy bob until he f***s up. And yes maybe some people are cheaper, but is it going to be cheaper after its been carted across the country to see a specialist? I think not! When the car is on the road wether it be done by Kwikfit or not I will have the choice AND time, you people seem to think I've got so much of, it will need a service in the near future.

So Corby what happens if/when it fails completely, what will you do about your time then? I'm pretty sure investing a few hours of time now will save you in the long run.

Do you just go against the advice of people in general, or just over the internet?

There really is a reason people say to go to specialists, it's not to line the pockets of them, there is a genuine valid reason - not that the car will know what genuine is if it stays at Kwik Fit ;)

Best of luck, and may the force be with you!

What you are not understanding is the long run, taking extra time now will prevent problems in the future and thus actually saving your precious time.

Just search on here for cambelt - thread after thread of "this mickey mouse garage did my cambelt, now its not running right/s**t itself".

People aren't saying this just to piss you off mate. They just don't want to see you spunk your time and money down the drain. I could just about trust them to do my alignment - nothing else.

Bridgey, you're sat behind a computer screen saying you should've done this, that and the other. I appreciate the concern you have pal but you weren't there at the time. I however was and all I knew was that I need this car on the road ASAP, someone was willing to fix my car while I went off to work. They said they can do so I'll hold them to that! It's their responsibility to get it right and if its not right s**t will hit that fan. End of.

Just popped out to get this for tomorrow.

I know mate, the point is you have them a try, before you did that you wouldn't of known whether the dude was a top flight crank or whether he was a actually a bloody good techie and now you know not to go back there ever again. You gave them a chance. That's all there is to it.

Look, I have been in a similar situation twice recently, once with my old BMW and once with my MX5, when they broke I of course needed them for work but instead of going to a garage that was just near where my car broke I made sure it was taken to a decent reputable garage, once to Mick and the other time to a MX5 specialist as I didn't want to risk my only mode of transport gaining more problems. I knew that it may take longer for them to sort it as they were both busy but I let them deal with it and they did great jobs and went the extra mile to sort my cars out. This is why I like going to specialists.

Right, Corby G I'm going to have to spell it out a little, as you seem to be ignoring everyone.

1) You CAN do a cambelt with no locking tools, a couple of screw drivers and some tipex, the car will probably even run, but it won't be right. This is the point they're making. Kwik Fit AS A COMPANY will not stock the specialist Renault tools to do the job correctly. People are trying to drive you away from Kiwk Fit because if the job is not done properly, it'll be a proper fight to prove they did it wrong and get it paid for by them to do it properly.

2) A lot of what you've written doesn't make sense. Are they saying the aux belt took out the cambelt? If so, it's almost 1000% certain to not just be fit some new belts and away you go. It'll have bent valves etc, but they seem to be COMPLETELY ignoring this (instant concern). So they're either just trying to con you with a timing belt change, or they're going to fit a new belt, start it up, and batter your engine some more.

3) They're replacing pump bearings? Make sure they charge you for the anti slip grease that goes with those...

They should just be replacing the pump if necessary.

Someone I work with took their car to Kwik Fit for a new exhaust system, a week later it fell off.

My mum had calipers changed at Kwik Fit, they couldn't be bothered to bleed the brakes and couldn't work out why the brakes didn't work.

Do you have breakdown cover? If so they'll probably collect your car and take it to a garage of your choice. I personally wouldn't trust Kwik Fit to change around wheels let alone carry out all the work you need on your car.

Rob.
Im far from ignoring people, but although people are saying specialist specialist specialist I didn't have a specialist infront of me at the time, what I did have was kwikfit, that's all there is to it.

You still don't get it do you?

Kwik Fit will f**k it up. Then you'll have to take it to a specialist to sort it out, costing more money.

They haven't started the work yet so it would be simple enough to arrange recovery and get it to a specialist and have it done properly, first time.

It's your choice in the end - your car your money - I think you'll regret your decision in the long run mate. Best of luck!
