Cliosport Photography Challenge Round 1: "Kitchen"

Concept:

Leading on from the drips project thread it's clear that we have loads of people who enjoy taking pics here, so to get us active in these dull wet winter months we will have a Photo Challenge every week or so to see what we can come up with. There will be no winners as such, but everybody who contributes will hopefully offer help/ideas and cast a critical eye over the other images.

What is also clear is that we have a massive range of cameras between us, so to keep things simple the subjects covered each week should be possible with any camera, should not need any expensive/specialised equipment or lens, and should be easily accessible by all (preferably around the home), there is no reason why you can't get a good shot out of a camera phone, so anything from those up to high-end DSLRs are more than welcome.

The only rules are as follows:

1. Basic cropping, colour correction, levels, covert to B&W, removal of dust spots etc is fine, but detailed Photoshop work, HDR etc are all out, this is about getting the best from what's around you, not what you can do in a photo editing package. The final image should look pretty close to the original shot, basically.

2. No archive shots, images should be taken specifically for the challenge. However it can carry on for as long as people are interested in the subject, so feel free to go back to an old challenge and add pics if you come up with something new.

3. "Enter" as many pics as you like, it's not a competition. Just try to keep them to a manageable size as per Cliosport guidelines (800 pixels wide or thereabouts seems fairly standard these days), the thread is completely open for discussion etc as well, no need for it just to be pics.

Now the intro is out of the way, game on....

Cliosport Photography Challenge Round 1: "Kitchen"

Thursday 24th January - Sunday 3rd February 2008

Brief is wide-open on this one, as long as it was taken in the kitchen and features something remotely recognisable from a kitchen then it's fair game.

If possible try to explain a little about your pic, how you did it, settings you used etc and if appropriate what camera/lens you used.

Also feel free to throw some ideas for the next challenge in (if there is enough interest), hopefully we will get some real interesting subjects similar to the drip thing in the future. Following on from Clart's comments in the other thread we can also look at turning this into a little competition if interest is reasonable, but that would probably mean people only posting the best pic they've got and would therefore probably reduce the discussion/support side of things, see how it goes...

i think this is worth stickying.........or each week as a new competition starts the current one will be stickied... ..il be having a mess around tommorow :)

I've had a little play tonight with the darkness. Made up a really simple non-technical cold set to get the ball rolling.

Heres the first lot that were average enough to stick up.

I'll get some more up tomorrow when the sun is out :D.

^ Yeah I agree. Will save forum space and ensures you critique your own work before you stick it up. I'll remove mine tomorrow, but in the mean time I best hit the sack. Nighty Night.

They are some pretty good pics, Agree there should be a Limit BUT maybe say 3 Pics

I'd say 3 pictures per person. Could do with having two threads. One to discuss, one to show case.

I'm also again your view of the digital dark room but I'll play by the rules ;)

Time to explore the new kitchen and finally break out the rig, good work on the challenge idea!

Loving the light, really effective. Pic #1 is a winner for me, looks like a poster for a horror movie or something, really cool.

As mentioned above I think 3 pics per 'idea' would be a good limit, can always come back with some more if you try something completely different.

hmmm just attacked the kitchen hand held natural light but my house mates are now home so err this is it for now lol

I feel these go well together...

Nice stuff pete!

Is that colour from multiple exposures (i don't even know if this affects colour) or is it fiddled with?
Assuming you don't have that many yellow mugs.

Thanks..

The multiple exposures won't affect the image colour, I've posted below what these came out converted from RAW to jpeg with no fiddling.

A quick contrast adjustment on the curves brought out the colours.

Check some curves tutorials if you use Photoshop.. this one shows how to do the contrast around 6 minutes..

At first glance I did wonder why you had so many cups!

Really good Pete. How have you learnt these things? Just from playing around?

Cool. Cheers!

Never thought about checking the tube for tutorials.
I've been playing around with curves recently but don't fully understand how to use it properly (just been messing around till i stumble across something that looks remotely good).

To much spare time as a student! :clown: So yeah just playing around, if you can understand the relationship between ISO, shutter speed, aperture and how they change exposure your set...

Cheese grater shots are awesome! Love the third shot with the little blades, quite sinister.

I get a chance to have a go at this now, thank god for the weekend! Hitting a bit of a brick wall with ideas though.

Need to think outside the box, I used the 50mm 1.8 depth of field getoutofjailfreecard for the above!
