Coil ingnition question

On my 172 there are 3 cables to the ingnition coil pack one is the main +12V and the other 2 are signals from the ECU but how does it work does the clio spark on the exhaust stroke or is it mor complicated than that ?

Yes, that is called 'wasted spark'
