Coilovers. Pro's and Con's!

As per the title gents, what are the pro's and cons of coilovers on a Clio sport 172? Mainly used for a daily driver, may do 1-2 trackdays a year if that!!

  172 cup- suzu rf600r
Extra wear on the driveshafts iv heard? Cheaper ones can give a harsher ride and poorer handling, might have to do some hammer modifying to the arches too

I just put standard suspension on, car came with racelands, much much better now :)

  Clio Dynamique Noir
They cost money? But as been said manufacturers spend many many hours and many moneys on getting the car ride perfect for everyone to enjoy!!

I have some though :approve:

  MK3 GTI golf 16v
looks better, handles bet (in half the cases) better/more fun to drive with

yeah most are stiffer/harsher than standard but i like it. i hate how boaty and bouncy standard suspension feels. coilovers ftw

  172 Ph1, Lupo GTI
Theres nothing massively wrong with a decent brand of coilover. The biggest issue is customers set the ride height then drive the car with no maintenance to the suspension. Dirt and salt and water take their toll and the ring adjusters often seize.

Pros - everything
Cons - higher inital outlay. Buy cheap buy twice. You'll thank yourself when you saved that bit extra for the good ones.

Are the Racelands that bad? Or is it just cheap coilover snobbery?

Bit of both probably lol

When I bought the car as soon as I saw it was racelands I was dubious, second cup iv owned though and in my mind the previous standard one was better.

Left the racelands on though for almost a year but got proper fed up of the crashing and banging so changed, standard ride is much better no more banging on bumps, exhaust hitting the cross beam with passengers, and over bounciness.

Car doesn't 'feel' as planted but does turn in sharper and doesn't hop about on slight in corner bumps anymore. Looks better too IMO which is weird I thought I'd miss the lowered looks, but defo less chav now.

Altogether a win I think :)

it was the racelands i was thinking of getting as KTR are selling them off cheap!!

Well it's just my opinion mate other people will tell you they're great probably, for the price you wouldn't lose much to buy and try for a while then sell on if you don't like, just keep a hold of your standard gear ;)

cheap coilovers = w**k and will ruin your handling

When compared to more expensive coilovers, probably. But how do they compare to the stock suspension, which, at the price the Racelands are now, is actually a more expensive setup than the coilies.

tricky one. There's a lot of crap out there, and a lot of the time good quality parts are badly setup. If you can't afford a good quality set of coilovers, then standard shocks (new) with good springs is a better route to take. If you want to go as low as you can, then there's lots of budget sets, but you need to choose which set rides well enough. We choose to supply V-Maxx as our budget setup, even though they aren't the cheapest out there, but they are comfortable on the road. For more serious setups we've worked with SPAX to develop several new kits

im on racelands for wee k now and only bad thing is exhaust on rear beam.ive been told raceland are same as ktec ones but i have no idea if its true.

The worst thing about any coilovers imo is most people don't get them set up properly then complain about wrecked handling etc.

nah I dont think so, they sell both. They actually had about a dozen manufacturers send them samples to try, all quite similar as there's not many things you can make different

I've got Bilstein B14's...amazing when you want to push it and have it a bit of fun and of course as you'd expect on track too.

On the road they're quite harsh and bump, but that's pretty much the same with all coilovers.

incorrect, doesn't have to be that way

are spax good springs? do they do progressive springs? im looking for good quality ride and lower it slightly, so the wheels fill the arch a bit more!! (i dont want it slammed!!)
do you do mail order?

not my first choice of springs, but they're ok. Better than Apex for example which are aweful. I like PI springs for a road car, 25mm drop, ride well and work with standard shocks. Eibach are good but they dont really make enough difference over standard to notice. Currently expanding our mail order service, so yes we can send out to you if you like, or if you want fitting of anything, we're only down the road from you

i like you, but you do talk s**te sometimes :rasp:
got a car with a knocking set in the workshop right now. removed and returned numerous sets, identified knocks that multiple experts couldn't find and blamed on top mounts. Even removed some that had already been reconditioned once and one of the fronts had play in it again.

I'm pretty sure K-Tecs own brand are V-Maxx, they look identical (if you side them with Raceland they look nothing alike) I actually don't think they're that bad for the price point really...however I can't wait to get my B14s back on

My H&R's should be back from Bilstein next week after a makeover - fingers crossed it solves the issues...

I'm running K-Tec and apart from scrubbing (front is abit low though tbh) they work for me. More than comfy enough on the road all things considered.
