Confused DVDRW Can't Make It's Mind Up

  1.6 Ford Focus
This is quite annoying now... I have a DVD Burner and I have been trying to burn some files to a DVD which has worked perfectly in the past... But for some odd reason it's now turned into a useless confused wreck.

It keeps changing it's mind and saying its a DVD-ROM, CD-ROM, CD-RAM or DVD-RAM. Whenever I stick a disk in it, it decides it wont burn anything to it because it's not a burner!

Any suggestions on this?

Yeah finding the manufacturer is just as big of an issue... its unbranded... no company names on it what so ever.

It clearly has RW DVD+R DL, DVD Multi Recorder and CDRW written on the front of it and it has burnt DVDs before... even windows driver check software is insisting its a CD ROM drive.

have you tried going control panel > system > click hardware tab > click dvd/cd-rom drives mine then tells me its make and model number

Tried that, it just says CD-ROM Drive

Edit:
I uninstalled it via device manager and then refreshed it, the model number is ATAPI DVD A DH20A4P.

This happened to one of my mates a couple of years back - the PC would slow right down as XP was constantly changing his DVD-RW drive from CD-R to DVD-R to DVD-RW and back again, this would only stop if he put a disc in.

Try it in another computer if you can, it's probably just windows throwing a wobbler.

What version of windows are you on btw? And is it a laptop or a desktop?

i had this aswell my computer (the folder thing) would crash until you eject the disk?

i reinstalled windows (other reasons aswell) and have not noticed it since

I did notice my computer had gone a little slow... Then again even reading disks has gone really slow.

Im using Windows XP Pro with SP3 installed and its a desktop.

I don't have the folder problem and reinstalling XP isn't possible.
