Console backwards compatability

I've done a bit of research on the net but cant find any decent info, I dont tend to read computer mags these days so I'm not upto date with these things.

Can the PS3 play all PS2 and PSx games? I've read somewhere that the graphics are reduced in quality if you do. Can the XB360 play original XB games?

Cheers fella's, much appreciated.
So it seems you need to run an emulation patch for each game on the xbox? It's a shame because I dont rekon I'm gonna bother accessing the net with either machine, basicly I just wanna plug in and go.

I have some good memories in my old ps1 games collection, dating back to my beer fueled uni tournaments, so i'd be gutted if I cant play em on the PS3.

Well if the PSP is anything to go by then things should improve quite drastically, especially when the hackers get a hold of it!

I've been ripping some PSX games to the PSP this week, currently playing final fantasy 7 when i'm bored at work, great stuff!

I know what your saying dude the games definatly have moved on, just I aint!!!haha My old games still get serious replay!

I'm always getting the 3rd degree about the number of consoles I have (only 2!!!!!) because there is no room in the house for more bulky consoles and all their pads etc.
So if I go buying another I'll will still want to play the old games every now and then, for me getting rid of the ps2 / xbox is not an option if I want to play psx games. Sounds daft but it really is a deal breker for me.

How are you hacking the games spirez, or is that stealthy secret need to know stuff!!

There's a custom firmware been created by a dude called Dark Alex called 3.10 OE. If your PSP is on version 3.03 ar less you'll be able to downgrade to 1.5 and then put the custom firmware on it.

Then you just have to download a program to rip the game into ISO format, and then another program to turn it into a file called an EBOOT. Stick the eboot on your memory card and you're good to go!

You can also rip UMD's and put the ISO on your memory card so that you dont have to carry around all of the discs

There's loads of other stuff you can do too but i haven;t really figured that out yet, far to much geek talk on the PSP forums for me to understand what to do!

There are always patches/updates for games and the system itself to download, probably won't get the best out of it, but you don't need to pay for them so just connect it to your router whenever you want to d/l stuff.

The 'emulation' patch for the games needs to be downloaded the first time you use each one but not after that (it's invisible).
