Cooling fan prob!!!!!!!!!!

  Clio II and Grand Modus

The cooling fan at the radiator is not starting whem the engine gets hot. The fan is ok, gave it some 12v from the battery to see. The "reader" that sits at the engine works fine too,as it´new. soo it somting between thats not giving a signal to the fan to get going???

  Clio II and Grand Modus

there is no fan switch in the radiater!!! the car is a 1999 clio 1.6. Where would it be on the car then???

OH right, in that case the fan is controled by the injection computer via the CTS info. kicks in at 96 deg.

if i knew the straight answer i would tell u.

but since im on the other end of a computer screen its pretty hard to diagnose somebody elses problem, your gonna have to sort out the problem, possibly pop down to Ren and get it on the CLIP.

Weel I have been at Reno, and they looked like a BIG ?????, changed the CTS reader on the left side of the engine,or what it´s called, but the one I had was fine! Still don´t work, so i´m going there on monday to have a word with them:mad:

I almost knew more about it, than the guys at Reno, and I´m not even a mecanic. Told them it wasn´t going to work........They looked like they didnt know what to do, and now my temp- meter in the dash is fu*ked to!!!

  Clio II and Grand Modus

No........the readings goes try the computer or something. If you short circut yours does the fan start???

that the coolant temp sener, it sends into about coolant temp to the ECU, then the ECU tells the fan when to switch on. Ive had a look and there seems to be no fan temp switch on this car.

If you provide your vehicle code (in the oval plate) then i can confirm for sure.

if the temp gauge is fubared then it leads me to think that if the CTS is new there is an ECU fault. Which should be logged by the CLIP computer.

Code is: CB0D F008026

But i´m sure there is no fan temp switch........Can the ECU loose the data, since it dont make the signal? must be a wire or somthing, but have had a multimeter on to check, and they seems ok:confused:

  Clio II and Grand Modus

ok.........But where is the CTS located? It was the colant temp. sensor they changed. sorry didn´t know what it was called......

  Clio II and Grand Modus

Arrrr Ok........ must be the ECU then.........But reno didn´t get any ifo on the computer.....I saw it myself as I was there. No fault readings on screen

Anyway thanks for the help, I can now tell Reno how it works...again!!!

I feel sorry for them already

I wondered if it went through the ECU just after I posted - that does make more sense!

As soon as I disconnect the coolant temp sensor the fan starts to run.

thats correct.the computer has a defect mode where if there is an open circuit on the inj temp sensor it constantly runs the cooling fan.if you unplug the sensor and the fan kicks in you know all the wiring, relays etc are ok.the problem would then seem to be the sensor itself.

the ecu controls the fan via a relay in the engine fuse box on the n/s/f inner wing.what happens when you unplug the temp sensor on the engine? check the relays as they suffer from being corroded by water ingress.

When I unplug the sensor nothing happens.........Have looked at the relays in the box near the inner wing, and tryed to switch them as there is 2. The metalpins was not correded and seemed ok. Will check them again and take some WD 40 and spray the pins mabye his will solve it...........The sensor is brand new and I saw the engine temp. at Reno . as they had their computer connected to my car. The reading was correct.........

probably a faulty wire between the ecu and the fan relay.had one like this before and the actuator wire from the ecu to the relay had corroded through in the loom.

  Clio II and Grand Modus

I have now tested the relay with 12v and it´s ok........When i make the connection with a wire the fan starts, so the signal from the ECU is not made. Had the multimeter on the wirepin at the relay socket but can´t find it in the socket that goes on the ECU??? should there be a wire from the ECU to the relay? In that case I think its broken and that is why I can´t get a reading.

there is a wire from the ecu to the relay.the ecu supplys an earth to the relay which activates it.the relay has 4 wires to it.2 thickiss wires(1 is a ing feed and one goes to the fan moter) the other 2 thinner wires are 1 is an ing feed and the other is the switchable earth from the ecu).cant check the exact pin locations until i can see a wiring diagram because there all at work.

  Clio II and Grand Modus

ok thanks..........Just what I thought!!Had a multimeter on and that was also my guess. The wire from the relay is then broken as I can´t find it in the ECU socket as I been ohm all the pins

  Clio II and Grand Modus

If you will look in the renault wiring diagrams when you are at work to see what number the pin on the ECU have it will be very helpfull..........Thanks again:D
