Could it be piston rings??

  ClioII 1.2L 2003
Good Day to you all

Last week I had my valve fixed ( 1.2 16V ) and while the head was off, my mechanic was able to slightly move some pistons right, left, up and down and told me that this is a sign of worn piston rings

My car doesn't smoke at all but when changing my air filter I always find loads of oil behind their which I can collect with a cup:eek:
I feel poor in acceleration when 2 or 3 are in the car ( specially on hills ) and always think it is a low compression sign

Is it better to change only the piston rings or fetch a whole second hand block in a good condition ???

Regards

they all chuck loads of oil into the airbox, thats normal

as long as its not using oil, i'd leave it alone

depends how much they moved mate alot do move slightly . a good sign would be smoking and using oil . your air filter does get oily as there is a breather from the top of your head to the inlet so you will get some oil . as for the car feeling slow they arent very fast at all tbh and its more likely to be you gettin used to the car and it feelin a bit slower . especially when there are a few people in the car it will slow down a bit as its only a 1.2 .
you could change just the rings but cost and then cost of labour wouldnt be worth it . you mite aswell pick a engine up for £150 ish and give a mate 100quid to fit it .

Could it be excess crank case pressure forcing oil out the breather pipe into the airbox?
The movement in the piston doesn't sound good, but they should all allow for a tiny bit of movement.

Yes....as you said, it's a tiny bit of movement and I thought it's un-normal
what is confusing me is I know that any car with piston rings problem must smoke!!!:quiet:

What do you mean by excess crank case pressure??

compression test it first ;)

that will give you a far btter idea of engine condition

you can move a lot of pistons in cylinder blocks and its not always a "sign" that the rings are "worn" :D

FLOL at moving the piston to gauge ring wear hahaha, pistons will always move in the bore to some extent, excessive movement would be down to worn pistons or bores, if the bores are visually in good condition, then it's a fair bet that the pistons will be fine. If it's not burning oil at all, do nothing.

  polo, here for lols
wouldn't worry about slowing down up a hill with people in matey, mine does that lol. its worse with a fat person in it

Thankx all of you guys for your help and concern......gues I'll leave it alone as I may be still not used to small engines !!:D:D
