Crunchy gears

Since I have had the car I have noticed a bit of slack when letting the clutch out and accelerating - this with a few clunks at the same time. Tonight I noticed if I change gear while moving without letting the clutch out there is a mechanacal noise/crunch. This happens with every gear while on the move. I only noticed while in my street and havent gone back out. When stationary it goes into gear fine. I havent actually noticed anything too much out of the ordanary when driving normally other than the slack and very occasional crunch. Any ideas?

- I know this should be in mechanical but im supposed to be travelling at the weekend so I put it in general to get some quick responses! hopefully:)

The only time I get crunching is when I attempt a very quick change when thrasing the car. Even if I put the clutch right in, it still makes a quick but slightly disconcerting *CRUNCH*. Is alright when driving normally though.

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

Gearbox could be on its way then as my mates R5 did it and it cracked soon after. Maybe something minor too though.

I only noticed this tonight - I changed gear and it made a quiet crunch so I kept the clutch in and tried the other gears and it did the same for all of them. Its not a full blown "CRUNCH" its more of a quiet version!

Mine does it every time I change into 5th unless I hold the clutch down until the revs drop below 2500 then its alright. A little bit dodgy when you are going **mph (quite fast) as it means you are coasting. Reno cant find anything wrong, I even had them check the Gearbox oil level. Done it from new.

Yours sounds like adjustment of the cable is needed. Is there any free play / no resistance in the first part of movement on the clutch pedal other than the spring. If so could need adjusting.

Well drove the 1.5 miles to work and nothing! The gears are a wee bit notchy but thats it. Well I dont really know how it can happen then vanish - I think I will be going for a long run in my 1 hour lunch break!

  Hippys bus of LOVE !!!

Sounds like gear box fluid could be low or maybe the meshing has gone on the gear box (y)

I trust the clio s have meshing in the gear box and not some other intergalactic stuff

Sounds like the synchro-mesh is starting to wear in the box. I wouldnt worry about it if I were you.

Mines does it regularly when being put into reverse... I just try and be gentle with it and ease it in so Im not blunting the teeth of the synchro.

Youve got plenty more miles left in that box yet, dont fret.

jesus...27k.... thats young for a gear box to be playing up.

Still I wouldnt be too alarmed... its when you get whining or constant grinding from the box that its time for new underwear.
