CUP > 172 mk1

There are less Mk1 172's so I think it's a future classic in the making.
Mk2 172's can already be picked up for less than £1000 more, 172 Cups too...

Back to the OP question - George16V had a 172 cup then went to a Ph 1 172, guess which one he prefered?

HAHA future classic, thats a classic one LMAO.

It's basically cutting my loses! I'll sell the Cup to recoup some of the money locked up in it. I couldn't bear it if in 3 years time it was worth £4.5k! (Which it will be) and the money it cost me new (£12k) and the mileage I’ve done (+servicing/tax/fuel and insurance) you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know that’s a massive cost per mile! Supercar money almost!

So I thought I'd get the money back and use it on my flat which will add money to its resale value.

Although as I love my 172's a mk1 seems to be the perfect solution. As it won't drop much much lower than it already is.

well they're quicker than mk2 172s, thats all i know. Sure the dash is dated, but the throttle response is far superior and they are more fun.

Alledgedly

Buy the Ph1 172, and get the Ph2 dash, rear bumper and lights. Winner

Cup tuinis / trophy suspension / 182 cup hubs and wishbones etc / Recaros 182 exhaust / better matched manifold...then its game set and match...!

  Inferno 182 w/ Recaros ;)

Dont think they are quicker than a cup..........plus the MK1 172 looks poop - back bumper / rear lights / wheels.....

But they are cheap.

the mk2 phase 1 and the cup both do 0-60 in 6.7 seconds according to sources i have used in the past

who cares which model is the quicker one, if you spend all your time on track or drag racing then a few tenths of a second will count but for f**k sakes, this story of mk1 vs mk2 vs mk2 phase 2 is getting a little boring just be happy with what youve got, its a clio ffs thats all it will ever be,

mondial172 get a willy mate have driven a few and i got to admit its more fun than the 172/182s

ok fair enough, well for how much the mk1 172s are going for now i think you would be quids in

Seen a red one (my fav colour) for 5k with 55k on local to me.

It's either one of them or:

Focus Zetec 2.0 (cheap to run/insurance/good handling)
Astra 1.8 SXi (cheap to run but aren't amazing handling at least compared to the Focus)
Audi A3 1.8T (not keen on the early models which is all I can afford - expensive to insure and fix)

you'll miss the performance of the clio if you go for a the ford or vauxhall, the audi is nice and pretty quick but they cost alot to run, especially if something goes wrong

Yeah worried about things like the turbo charger breaking.

The Ford and vauxhall could be money saving options but....

the 172 at £5k ain't gonna drop much more money but a Focus or Astra costing £5k has still got a bit to drop. There are focus's on Autotrader for £1.5k!

Matey - you have to really way up your options and decide 'how much' money you will free up.

I went from a Cup to a mk1 172 only because the mk1 172 is of similar what and the throttle response seemed to be better.

You will also find (well I did) that when you throw it into corners is seemed to level out again a hell of alot quicker than a cup.

interior wise, yes it is a little dated, but you won't get any rattles like a cup.

I am now on a valver with a williams engine - well its being built and professionally stripped etc - def. the way to go for fun anyway.

Get out there and do some test drives!!

  Nippy white cup
As said take one for a test drive and see what you think. If you get a good one of one type against a bad one of another then it will obviously make a difference.

All I know is that Rhys of here had a 172 mk1 with rears out (iirc) decat exhaust and a couple of other mods...my cup had full interior, std exhaust and cat, just chip and filter.....he got 14.6 I got 14.4 (with 1000 miles on the clock)

Also look at the old vid Craig (adams 16v) did of the banana...compare the mk1 v banana races against mine vs banana. Maybe his m8s is a poor example (although I don`t think it was) but on my 2nd engine and it is still a good one...maybe I`m just lucky lol

  Turbos.
There are plenty of cheap Mk1s but remember with bigger mileage you're going to get some issues. Suspension and bushes might be knackered, major services coming up etc...

  RS-1, Bebop, CTR
The RS1 needs good maintenance, the suspension should be looked into every couple of months, engine should be bullet-proof if it was looked after, but the real problem is those little things that go wrong with age, like the electric windows switches, central locks, etc...also, the paint job is not among the best and they're quite prone to scratches, marks and dents, especially on the bonnet.

Oh, and then there is the exhaust system and the catalyst...both should recieve some attendace also...

So, it can be a handful, but old car will be an old car...

I got my Ph1 172 with 35k, so there is low milage ones out there, i dont think the ph1's will drop much more in price, if it was me id be looking at a ph1 or a williams but like you say your not interested in a willys, as said all you can do is go and test drive a mk1 see what you think, im not keen on the dash compared to my old mk2 but what can you do lol

my question is why? if you are going from a newer car to an older car then get a williams, much better looking and everyone knows they faster! pound for pound i think you will have more fun in a williams

have a word with yourself.

  B-road bully
do it, mk1 172's are rare which makes them great when seen. mk2 172 are nice but so many ppl do clones, look a likes etc, they seem to common..
