Cup Vs Non-Cup

Which is better? Which would you buy and why? I'm looking to get a Clio 172/182 and would like some advice.

I was all set to buy a 172 cup this week, but the AA checks showed up some shifting of the engine.

I have agreed a deal today for the 172 non cup, and i have to say im glad its turned out this way.

The cup seems to have slightly better handling, but nothing you are gonna get an advantage from on the road. The seats are much better in the non cup too, and you also get the xenons, air con and abs.

Just to let you know, as I have been corrected, these details are not spot on but near enough.

I'd search mate.

a 172 CUP is what 1 sec quicker 0 -60 than a full fat 172.

a 182 CUP is what .5 sec quicker 0 - 60 than a full fat 182.

Very simple guide but gives you an idea.

P.S. I chose to go for the full fat as there are so many extras you'd be silly (a cup owner ;)) not to go for it. Besides you're better off improving your driving skills rather than relying on the performance difference.

Depends on which Cup and which reg 172 though. Not all Cups have AC. My 53 172 has Cruise and 6 CD. All 172's except Cup have ABS too.

This has been discussed numerous times. I'd get a regular 172.

Do a search fella, both the above posters have got something wrong, so all you can do is just read every other discussion that's ever been had before...and there are planty to choose from.

Ultimately, what's better?

Whichever one best fits your specific requirements and comes in under your budget.

Edit: Chris ^^^ just picked up on the AC thing being wrong, the other one was about the seats. They are the same, feel the same, support you the same, but Cup one's are cloth not leather, missing a side airbag and no lumbar support.

IMO cup - hence why I bought one;) (can't be arsed to explain why, sorry)

The 172 Cup

A special edition 172 was made called the Cup. It had nothing to do with homogenisation etc as many people think it did it was a cheaper version of the 172.

Item removed include
Xenons (normal lights were installed)
Climate control (Climate control was an option on later Cups but originally it was removed and most Cups don't have it)
Lumber adjustable leather seats were removed. Normal Cloth seats were installed instead
Front head rests were chnaged from the Coma style to fixed tilt ones.
Rear 60/40 split rear bench was removed instead a fixed one piece cloth was used. No rear headrests were installed and the middle full rear belt was used instead of the full spec normal one.
The aultomatic lights and wiper were also removed
The spare wwheel was removed and a can of tyre foam was instead used.
The front side windows and windscreen were thinned and ligthen the heat resistant and UV protection was removed??????????????????????????????. This does mean that they can crack easier and many people when there replaced have them replaced with normal ones as most garages don't realise the Cup had a different spec windscreen.
Engine cover was removed.
Some soundproofing was removed
The side airbags were removed in the seats
The ABS system was removed a brake pressure valve ensure the rear brakes don't skid brake the carr to hard resultting in a skid. This is often an MOT failure however the DVLA have issued a technical note (?????????????????????????????????) to make testers aware that the Cup is unique.

All Cups are missing the drivers side door lock (for info see above none in phase 2 info).

Ligthening knocked apparently 89kg but figures are unclear as real life seems to disagree.

A lower spec interior was used (known as Mossa Dark Cloth).

The plastic surround on the speedo dials is also in mondail blue unlike the normal 172 which is painted silver.

The wheels were changed for turini ones with a different offset (38.5 vs 48 for the normal phase 2 and 43 for the phase 1) The wheels are lighter than standard ones. Also fitted to the Cups were a different rear spoiler and front splitter.

The Cups suspension was also changed new strenghtened hubs were used since the wheels were of a bigger offset plus more camber was used Also spring and damper rates were reworked with harder lb springs being used . Toe in etc was changed but see here for more details.??????????????????????. The car should be 3 mm lower due to camber changes than a full fat but tolerances arn't that tight so 3mm has no effect. The track was widened due to the wider offset wheels and the adjustment of the camber on the car.

Early Cups only came only in mondial blue (code D43) later ones had the option of silver and air con was an option but finding a Cup with aircon or in silver isn't easy.

The Cups came with different auxiliary belts though the setup was much simplified and a new alternator.

Since the Cup doesn't have ABS the gearbox was changed to a JC5 130 gearbox this was only different in that it had a speedo sensor in it. This was used to give the car its speed signal. This is therefore a problem wwith the Cups that gearbox are more difficult to get hold of since normal 172 phase 2 boxes (whilst still fitting) don't have the speedo output so the speedo doenst work.

The Cup was sold in small number on the continent as the Raigngatti (famous French Renault racing driver) although they were all LHD and had a bit more weight removed as they had no rear windscreen wiper.

There were some Cups sold from a few dealers with a LAD tunning package fitted. This gave a claimed 200hp and warrently cover (where Renault cover was removed due to the modifications) for the modified parts.

Cups did come with some little badges on the drivers door they can fall of though and bought seperate from Renault dealers

Also clear side repeaters were put into production about 2003. (from orange)

Basically we took a full fat, took all the luxuries out and sold it at enar enough the same price.

TBH i have been looking at cups and FF and the more i look the more i like the FF (SHOCK HORROR)

I quite like the idea of a black FF on Ultraleggra's and lowered!

Judging by the number of Cups that go backwards into hedges over the winter I'd say it was probabaly more accurate to say that the Cup is the choice of fuckwitted young lads who think buying a cheap Clio makes them hardcore, when in reality most of them can't drive.

That's the trouble with opinions though - They're like arseholes in that everybody has them ;)

It truly depends what your preference is. Whn you look at what extra equipment you get in a FF compared to a Cup, it represents something of a bargain.

When you look at how capable a Cup is on a track it's a performance bargain. In my opinion there is no better or worse, simply something to suit all tastse and budgets.

I'm 36 and have previously had nearly all rwd Escort MK1 and 2's, a Peugeot 1.9 GTi, a VW Golf MK1 GTi, a Valver, a Williams (then did the family thing a Vauxhall Vectra don't laugh), then a full fat 182 which I didn't like very much and bought a 172 Cup after driving my mates and I still absolutely love it, it makes me smile every time I drive it and the FF certainly didn't do that, but again its what people are used to, I have never been used to AC or CC or ABS or any of that, and its my daily driver apart from the summer when my Escort Mexico comes out of hiding

I prefere all the extras you get with a FF, but i like the styling , sopiler and splitter of the cup better, have a drive of both of them and then decide for yourself

Would never buy a car without ABS.

Honestly Steve I don't think the ABS has anything to do with them getting binned. I think it's simply because the Cup is quite a handful when the weathers less than perfect (light weight/fat tyres stiff suspension etc) and these young lads all think they are Colin McCrae!!!

Out in the sticks where i live, you see so many cars in the ditches when the weather changes & believe me ABS would help a lot of these stay on the road.
Mud, muck, diesel etc etc.

I used to think i was Colin, now im just Leob!!!!!!

ABS does not save you if you are a bad driver. Yes i've locked up but if you drive sensibly on the road there is really no need for abs IMO.

Not all CUPS have the drivers door lock removed.


Some have no locks

Some have one


Others have both (mine has both)

Out of the two I chose the full fat as 0.2 of a second on the 0-60 time was a big price to pay for the loss of a nice interior and climate control.

A good driver can easily compensate for the weight difference or you can just ditch the back seats, get lightweight buckets, lightweight alloys and ditch the spare for the same loss.

And I've seen women in cups

I'll put my pennys worth in...if you want the toys and a heavier car buy a FF 172...if you want something that is as close to the Clio Cup RACE CAR as possible then buy the LIGHTER Cup.
