Gearbox fully reconditioned last month by a reputable specialist and it’s just developed a bit of a crunch from fourth into fifth which goes away when warm. Syncro’s were fine before, it just had a whine at certain RPM

Specialist has been fine, really sorry, bring it back and we will sort it, which may mean removing the ‘box and sending it back to the company who they sent it to.

“First one we’ve ever had a problem with” typical it’s mine, four hour round trip to take it back.

I wonder what’s happened to it. Was fine when l collected it.

That does unfortunately appear to be the feeling these days in most of these 'my rebuilt box is fucked' threads @bloke

Just take the end cover plate off the box, you can replace the 5th gear synchro ( and the gear ) with the box still in the car

depends why it's gone though, normally it's from low oil but on a 'reconditioned' box it shouldn't go in the first place.

A pressure wash and spray it with enamel seems par for most reconditioner's these days tbfh....

What are the odds that the black piece of plastic in that picture is missing (feeds oil to the 5th gear )

seen a few that have lost the tube in the end cap or been rebuilt and the plastic drip tray is broken or missing. either way 5th generally the first thing to take a hit, plastic wears on the fork and gets worse from there.

In Bloke's pic?

Doubt it, it's my old box which ran fine in the 4 years I used it.

that's not your old one, but i sent the pic to niall to show what they look like with the aluma paint on. that's a dci box i got given to try in a boosted one.

Ahh ok.

His should be done soon shouldn't it?

just waiting for the head to be done, should have it back this weekend and then panic for a day and a bit to throw everything together and back in the car, wouldn't be bad apart from just about everything has been painted so no bumping or scratching anything ?

Oh aye, he's OCD now it's all been painted.

Well it’s going back next week and they did say they could take off the end cover to look at the fifth gear.
Does make me wonder if they left the plastic oil feed off? Sounds plausible and would explain the rapid failure of fifth gear (it was fine when l first had it back)
Agency reconditioned the box, but let’s give them a chance to sort it.

Well, l took the car back today....a four hour round trip.
Waiting to find out what is needed. The gearbox is fine once warm, it only has the 4/5 issue during the first few miles from cold.
