Dephaser noise

Hi all,

My dephaser has started making a noise. I only noticed it yesterday after turning off the radio (fed up with all the Christmas songs) and it sounds like a bag of spanners in a washing machine today.

It had the cambelt, aux belt, dephaser and the waterpump all changed in Feb 2012 by http://www.diamondmotors.net/ who are a trader on this forum and Renault specialist.

Has anyone had any experience of them giving up after such a short time?

Contact Mick where you had it done. But no it should not fail that quick . But when did you last have the oil changed and have you checked it.?

I would suspect a call to mick would be more appropriate at this point for him to look over the vehicle.

but as a general rule no I would not expect it to go that quickly at all, the dephaser is a none serviceable item, so in theory if looked after with regular oil changes etc it should last the life of the car

Oil has been changed twice since the work was done with fuchs titan pro s 5w 40. Oil levels are spot on and regularly topped up. I'll give Mick a call after Christmas and arrange to pop down. He's a really nice chap and to be fair it has been nearly two years since the work was done so I wont be expecting any favours. Just unlucky I suppose!

Was the waterpump genuine? I thought my dephaser had gone turned out it was the WP.
Whilst it shouldnt have gone already, of the things you did have replaced, its the most likely to fail prematurely.

He only uses genuine parts so I assume so yeah but obviously I couldn't be 100% sure. He seems like a very trustworthy chap though so I have no reason to doubt him. Plus I've had it up on a ramp at work and everything else seems fine.

ai there's no way Mick would pull wool over anyone's eyes or cut corners, I've had two cars he's looked after for the previous owners and workmanship and components are exactly as you'd expect, genuine and honest, like the man

give him a bell in the new year when diamond motors re-opens (presume he's shut for Christmas, etc) and he'll be able to offer some advice.

Side stepping this thread slightly, genuine waterpump is advised yes but non genuine work perfectly providing you use one with a metal propeller not plastic.

Sure it's the dephaser? I only use genuine parts yes but as with all things in life, sometimes things go wrong.

I always ask that if customers are happy that they tell who ever they like but if they are unhappy in anyway that they tell me first.

Unfortunately no manufacturer of any mechanical assembly can assure 100% reliability 100% of the time of its components but by using genuine parts you do reduce the chances of these things happening greatly.

Please get in touch though, I will see what was done and if I can get any contribution from RUK for you I will (I have gotten people help with gearboxes and other bits before which were out of warranty).

dephaser question:
with the cam belt removed when rotating the dephaser pulley by hand left-right it moves slightly in both directions, maybe 2mm(or less) in each direction or so. seen this happen when I did my cambelt change last week. Is it on it's way out or that's normal?
I intend a cam upgrade next year so will change the dephaser at that moment if it needs to. (car has about 75k)

Any movement = replacement required im afraid.

Sometimes it is just one of those things that happens. I've seen the K4M dephaser units fail after 18 months before but honesty, never a 172/182 unit.

Sorry Andy I think you've got the wrong end of the stick. In my earlier post I said this:

A couple of people are saying I should of PM'd Mick but the purpose of the thread was just to see whether anyone else had experienced this problem and to see what they did. I only stated the company that did the work to clear up that the work had been performed properly. I've no complaints over them. If anything I have and am full of praise for them. The car has had quite a bit of work done there so I know better than most how good they are. It's great news that Mick can take a look for me and speak to RUK.

It was the water pump. Booked in for next Tuesday with Mick.
