Dephaser question

My 182 is going into get fixed in two weeks - long story involving a new engine being added without the dephaser being changed

quick question though - can the dephaser pulley fail as I think it has on my and if so what could of happened to the engine?

very very rarely fail to the extent of causing engine damage unless the wrong cam seal is put in and the oil spills over the timing belt. maybe the new engine was not timed up correctly and damage was caused by that
