diesels are the future

  MK4 Anni & MK5 Edt30
they are quick! Got blown off yesterday by a ibiza TDI on dual carrigeway in me valver, and me m8 got blew off yesterday in his 172 by a leon cupra diesel. Dear o dear...ps. By "blown off" i do mean being over taken whilst trying not to be

diesels are the future... so much so that Ferrari are ditching the V8's in favour of the vastly superior oil burner... you heard it here first...

You and your mate need driving lessons, diesels are not the future, they are slow, noisy and smoky!

Your 172 can rip at least 5 seconds off an Ibiza TDi from 0-100mph, you only got beaten because you were in the wrong gear.

Bloke at my work keeps telling me his Civic 2.2CDTi will beat my 182 because it has 300,000 lb/ft of talk at 1600 rpm! He wont prove it to me though!

  172 Mk2 Ph1
but crap power bands, lots of changing gear in and around town, especially ones with 6 gears, good mileage, great torque, but over all, not as good as petrols in my opinion, depends what type of drive you want also, deisels more relaxing, generally not as exhillerating...

it will. Probs not 0-60 but after that, ur a gonner. Leon Cupra Diesel's r 157bhp with the torque of a plain and theres no chance a 182 wud beat it

  Turbos.
They aren't very satisfying really, you either drive a cheap diesel that sounds like an old Transit van, or an expensive diesel and you don't hear anything. As an enthusiast, noise is important to me, normally helped by lots of revs!

You're not cliokhunts brother are you?

Torque is a twisting force, for acceleration, power is what matters top end.

Think before you post Wilky,

Lets say the Clio is 1 second faster from 0-60 and 5 seconds faster from 0-100 in test figures.

That means that from 60-100 the Clio is four seconds faster if both cars are in the right gears and going for it!

As far as I know, none of the 4 pot diesels can hit 100mph in 17 seconds or top 140mph, therefore a Clio is faster.

Shall we throw some corners into the equation too, and hammer all diesel dogs out of sight?

Im 100% clio, im just sayin that these cars are weirdly quick. They dont feel it, they just go. The books r never right, u hav to see it believe it

The short rev range and Turbo allow them to suprise na cars sometimes, but drop to the right gear and you will see off anything burning oil this side of a 535d or a VW V10 TDi!

That as maybe, but I can still laugh when they power away from me as they look f**king stupid with a big black cloud coming out of the back of them. I don't like driving around in cars that sound like a 20 year-old transit van with a 1/2 mile trail of black s**t coming out of the back. Each to their own though.

  Not a Clio anymore.....

The ibiza Cupra TDi is only 0.3 secs 0-50 slower than its petrol counterpart and is quick in anyones book and if you can actually notice the difference then you have some kind of extra sensory perception. If a clio is loaded up with yer mates then the diesel will leave it for dead. What does it matter if a Clio can hit 100 in 17 secs or do 140 but a diesel can't? You won't ever need to find out on a road anyway but if you are talking about track days then obviously a petrol is the way to go.

All I'm saying is there are quick diesels out there and if you are doing 10k+ miles a year the money you'll save in fuel would keep the missus happy in bling for a while ;)

My father in law has a 535D bmw and its very fast.It used to leave me for dead in my 182 at any spead too.The 80-100mph is quicker than the M5 version aswell
Dont get me wrong though the BMW is 35k and a clio isnt.
In a few years though that car will be 10k and afordable to most.diesels are the future imho as they just won a le-mans didnt they.?less pit stops due to mpg and the same speed as the rest of the cars.

Ian,

An M5 will destroy a 535d at any speed, its not even close!

And yes the winner of this years Le Mans was the only manufacturer who bothered to enter a works team.

Using a bigger engine and more cylinders.

If Fred Dibner had Audis budget and an unlimted engine size he could have probably built a coal powered steamer to win Le Man.

Try telling that to Audi and the other competitors at Le Mans this year.................

^^^^lol very good roy
Im just downloading the top gear video where i think i remember clarkson driving the 535d and saying about the 80-100 times.ill let you know hawk

All the figures you need are in the back of Autocar Magazine, and trust me, the M5 is faster from 0-60 and 0-100.

Was it a Fiat Stilo or an Arstra that Clarkson raced an EVO FQ400 with from 30mph in 5th and won? Totally love Topgear but its not a good source of facts!

Hawk i was wrong about the M5 i dont know where i heard that.I must of been confused with the tourque figures.
Anyway here is the top gear 535d video and note that its 3 seconds a lap quicker than the clio 182.Its also faster than the 350Z and beats the focus RS

It is a fast car no doubt, and I said earlier that it will beat a Clio, but its no M5 beater.

What I said and will argue till petrol runs out about is that none of the 4 pot sporty diesel hatches can hold a light to the Clio RS in outright performance terms, mind you, neither can many of the petrols!

Diesels have their uses, and some people actually prefer them, but for outright performance, petrol wins and always has done!

Wilky, you put in a poor show against those Spanish Oil Burners, now go out and right this wrong, show them the score, lay it down on the floor!
