Differential gone

Hello guys,
Some days ago i've heard a lound bang under the gear lever. I could drive for a bit but mostly straight, when i turned the steering wheel just a little bit the whole engine started banging, and steering wheel wanted to go back to straight. Which led me to believe some problems with the diff.
Opened the box up and found two halves of a retaining ring on the diff, short shaft side.
Loud grinding was present while just towing the car in neutral.
Nothing wrong with the gears as far as i can see, but im wondering what this retaining ring does?
DOes it just hold the driveshaft bearings in?
Did the shaft just back out of the box, so the car didn't move?

So its just a matter of the shaft popping?
I might just buy a new circlip because the shipping time to Croatia might be too long, and i'm left with no car now

Usually the groove the clip sits in gets damaged, leading to a repeat of the problem.

I've dismantled the gearbox completely today and gave everything a good wash and check. Gearset looks fine, the differential on the side of the clip was stuck, i dismantled the diff too and it now spins good, it looks like it has a slight edge to it right where the clip retains it. I was thinking of giving everything a good polish on the lathe, making a retaining plate similiar to the renfort or just putting a new clip in and weld it around. Then with new bearings it should be good to go?
I just need a comfirmation at this point lol

This is the cup and diff condition, it spins very good inside, just concerned about the acoeing in the diff. Its not as bad as the pic makes it, i can barely feel it.
Finding another diff is basically impossible where i live, so i really hope someone confirms this is good.
